Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Construction Inspector , with 5 years of experience, to join our Water Sector in Winston-Salem, NC.

As a Construction Inspector, you will utilize your construction experience and technical knowledge of municipal infrastructure, water and wastewater facilities, and general building projects to successfully execute and manage projects, under the supervision of the Construction Manager or Project Manager, and help us build and grow our practice.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring daily contract compliance to project plans and specifications on construction projects and for documentation to support payment and project acceptance. Enforces contractor compliance to plans and specifications; Reviews contract change order costs

  • Checks final contract estimates for completeness; Determination of final contract cost

  • Serves as project inspector responsible for coordinating all assigned phases of work between project manager's office and the contractor

  • Refers construction not in compliance with plans and specifications to project manager

  • Recommends acceptance or rejection of construction materials for quantity, quality, and conformance to applicable specifications; records characteristics of materials incorporated into the project by the contractor

  • Inspects contractors' work on one or more construction projects; reviews, collates, and records data received from other inspectors

  • Read, understand, and interpret project plans and contract documents. Identify possible problems in contract documents and propose solutions or refer them to the Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager or Project Coordinator as appropriate

  • Ensure construction work is performed in accordance with the contract documents through inspection and monitoring

  • Prepare required documentation for the assigned project

  • Assist in operation of the Quality Control/Quality Compliance program for projects

  • Ensure elements of QA/QC program are complied with

  • Enter or transfer information to computers

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Requires advanced knowledge of local, state and federal building codes, construction principles, techniques and procedures, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with contractor, project team and clients, including ability to resolve conflict situations.

  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the project team, obtaining and sharing necessary information.

  • Strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.

  • Enjoy field work, demonstrate problem-solving abilities along with a commitment to thrive in a proactive organization where client service is priority one.

  • Proficient using a computer and Microsoft Word.

  • Ability to analyze data and prepare written reports.

  • Must be physically able to work in the field at various construction sites.

  • Good driving record is required.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Education and Experience

High school diploma required. Associate or Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or related field of study is a plus.

Minimum of 5 years of experience for major projects including inspection and utility construction project experience is preferred.

Position will work in both a field and office setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Must be available to travel for out of town projects when needed.

Responsibilities include: * Assist in the inspection of various roadways and structures construction operations and perform a variety of calculations and computations with supervision * Perform materials sampling and testing * Collect materials weigh tickets and conduct various roadway tests to ensure materials delivered to project meets specifications and are placed in accordance with standard specification * Keep various project records/ reports * Take field measurements of various completed items and make calculations to determine contract pay quantities * Read plans and blueprints Qualifications: * Basic computer skills including, using an iPad, Microsoft Windows, email and Internet * Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry and the ability to apply formulas * Good written and verbal communication skills * Level II and III Technicians must be able to perform duties without constant supervision and should be able to read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements * Level IV technicians may serve as a lead project inspector performing general project oversite and communication with the contractor and NCDOT * Level IV technicians will be responsible for the supervision of lower level technicians while providing guidance as needed * Ability to perform required testing and maintain detailed reports * Ability to communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public * Ability to drive Certifications Preferred: * NCDOT Concrete * NCDOT QMS Roadway * NCDOT Conventional Density * NCDOT ABC Sampling * NCDOT Borrow Pit Sampling * NCDOT Level II Erosion & Sediment Control Candidates will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including hazards at highway construction sites. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion. Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 12 hours a day on occasion. Must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, to raise hands above head, to sit, climb and balance and to work in confined spaces and heights.
