Description
The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Construction Inspector, Principal with the Paving Division. The incumbent is responsible for performing the Inspection of Traffic Signal installation within the city.
As assigned, incumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring work completion.
Duties include but are not limited to
Performs detailed inspections in regard to the City's Paving program including utility adjustments and ADA handicap ramp compliance.
Interprets plans and design specifications to ensure project compliance with City and VDOT standards along with construction contract specifications; prepares detailed project inspection reports; and performs related duties assigned
Reviews and examines material for projects. Identifies and locates faulty materials and workmanship, documents compliance and suitability of materials for installation and application
Tracks progress of construction projects; calculates and records quantities or material used; and computes contractor work in progress for progress payments; maintains files of daily inspection reports and project activities
Ensures proper placement of maintenance of traffic devises and ensure traffic control is maintained
Ensures proper safety practices are followed at work sites
Ensures compliance with all MUTCD requirements
Advanced knowledge of inspection activities including having VDOT certificates pertaining to asphalt and concrete
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's Degree in engineering technology, construction management, or business management
Five years of construction inspection, land development, or contractor operations experience
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Preferred a candidate to have VDOT certifications in Concrete, Asphalt field 1 &2 or within 6 months of employment
Experience and certified in Work Zone Safety
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record within 30 days of hire
Virginia Department of Transportation certifications in Soils, Asphalt, Concrete, Aggregates, and Pavement Markings, as assigned
Requires Operator Qualification for all gas related tasks, as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, climb, crouch, finger (picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers), talk, see, hear and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. The employee is frequently required to reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palms, and feel. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, push, pull, lift, and feel. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
