About the Job

Construction Highway Technician 1 is responsible for coordinating work as a senior inspector of other Highway Technicians. Incumbent provides employee performance feedback to project engineer/supervisor.

A Day in the Life

  • Complies with INDOT safety policies and procedures;

  • Performs work assigned by project supervisor/engineer, ensuring that the required tests,

measurements, and inspections are completed and recorded in a timely manner;

  • Ensures required inspections are completed in a timely manner and problems are reported;

  • Ensures work conforms with appropriate plans, specifications, procedures, and policies;

  • Provides feedback to project supervisor/engineer for performance management purposes;

  • Communicates employee issues to project supervisor/engineer, providing documentation as necessary;

  • Performs job documentation tasks such as site manager;

  • Provides assistance to the general public by responding to general inquiries, explaining

delays, etc.;

  • Participates in winter snow and ice removal operations;

  • Performs emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures,

placement of signs, and erecting barricades; and,

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • High school graduate or equivalent required;

  • Three (3) years experience as a Highway Technician 2;

  • Must have completed Modules 1, 2 and 3 of the Highway Technician Program or equivalent;

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws, and regulations for purposes of construction inspection;

  • Knowledge of drafting and surveying techniques;

  • Must possess a valid drivers license;

  • Must have valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days;

  • Required to submit to, and pass, a drug test as a condition of employment;

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds;

  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and

walking for long periods of time;

  • Ability to perform basic math calculations;

  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather;

  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly;

  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team; and,

  • Must be able to adequately perform computer skills.

About the Job INDOT's Construction Engineers serve as the lead for all of the agency's projects out in the field. Serving as a project engineer on INDOT work sites, this position plays a vital role in the full cycle of planning, building, and maintaining a superior state transportation system for the Crossroads of America. INDOT relies on these engineers to supervise a wide variety of employees and contractors, as well as to effectively and efficiently manage multiple projects in multiple phases at any given time. A Day in the Life * Makes recommendations to superiors relating to change order;. * Prepares progress reports, special reports relating to problems and delays, and examines and approves daily field reports prepared by others; * Coordinates work assignments of technicians with other supervisors and Area Engineers; * Responds to inquiries from local public officials, news organizations and other interested parties; * Maintains control over attendance and work conditions for subordinates; * Ensures that both INDOT and contractor employees are performing work in a safe manner in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards, reports deficiencies to appropriate office; * Maintains all files related to project in an orderly and usable manner; * Supervises preparation of final construction records, examines and approves contractor requests for payment. * Attends preconstruction and partnering meetings as INDOT representative; * Meets with affected property owners in the project area and works to resolve access restriction issues, drainage problems and other issues that may arise during construction. * Maintains daily project records and files, and oversees the work of technicians doing the same, including daily reports of materials placed, locations of work, work interruptions, contractor workforce size and composition, test results and any other related information * Prepares simple field drawings or sketches as necessary to implement and document minor changes to project specifications. Prepares and submits a wide variety of documentation to the Final Review Office. Coordinates with the Final Review Office in the project closure process, answering questions and doing research as requested; * Teaches certified technician classes and assists students in preparation for examinations; * Performs other related duties as assigned. What We're Looking For * Civil Engineer with Bachelor of Science Degree; * Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Indiana; * Twelve months experience as transportation engineer is preferred; * Must possess valid driver's license; * Considerable knowledge in Microsoft programs; * Broad knowledge in construction materials sampling and testing standards; federal, state, and departmental established test procedure and standards pertaining to materials.
