NV5 is currently recruiting for a Field Inspector in Stockton, CA - Merced, CA - Bakersfield, CA, - Sacramento, CA and Fresno, CA.


Performing contract item inspections for ensuring compliance with plans and specifications on all phases of highway or bridge construction projects including but not limited to;earthwork operations, placing of base and roadbed materials, materials control at asphalt and batch plants, culvert construction, pile-driving, placing structural steel, erecting false work, forms and structural steel.


  • Knowledge of contract documents to include but not limited to the Standard Plans and Specifications, varying types and methods of industry construction practices,
  • State safety orders, traffic control, field office engineering techniques, effective communication, both written and verbal and negotiation skills with respect to internal and external clients.
  • A minimum of five years of construction inspection experience is preferred but not required.

Employment Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Either: 1. Two years in the class of Construction Inspector in Sacramento County service. Or: 2. Three years experience in general highway, street, or waste water control and drainage construction as an inspector in these areas or serving in a higher capacity such as a contractor's foreman or superintendent. Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements. Special Requirements for Some Positions in this Class Some positions in this class may require expertise to inspect in one or more of the following special phases in the construction of a Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant: the installation of large electrical equipment, large pumps and mechanical equipment and/or complex structural steel and concrete. These special skills that may be used in the construction inspection of a very large and complex process treatment plant are as follows: Electrical Installation of: 1. The motor control center of electrical panels, switch gear, and lighting. 2. Instrumentation of the facility. 3. Power equipment up to 69,000 volts. 4. Automatic computerized systems. 5. Communications systems. 6. High, medium and low voltage power control circuit. Mechanical Installation of: 1. Piping for cryogenic systems. 2. Hydraulic lifts and/or elevators. 3. Process equipment including pumps up to 125 mgd, grinder, conveyors, and welding connections. 4. Large heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems. General Qualifications Driver's License: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher is required prior to appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate California Driver's License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Certificates/licenses: Some positions in this class require incumbents to complete one year of verifiable experience in the appropriate field and, within one year thereafter, to obtain certification from a recognized state, national or international association, as determined by the County. Any person currently and continuously employed by the County as an inspector, plans examiner or building official, for not less than two years prior to January 1, 1996, is exempt from the certification requirements as outlined above. In addition, persons appointed to this class might be required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education every three years. The County may determine appropriate providers of continuing education such as community college or organizations affiliated with code enforcement. Physical Abilities: When working at the construction sites, incumbents will be required to: * bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch * reach above the shoulder * climb ladders * lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance * walk on uneven surfaces * distinguish colors in order to visually trace colored electrical wiring, read as-built drawings, and read Underground Service Alert markings * crawl into attics and under buildings * climb into and out of ditches and swimming pools excavations under construction * enter underground pipes through 26" manholes Working Conditions: Incumbents are required to work out-of-doors and in all kinds of weather. At construction sites, incumbents will be exposed to dust and fumes. Incumbents may be required to work nights and on weekends.
