Job Summary: The Construction Estimator supports the Construction Services team through the development and management of unit costs and assembly based estimating tools. The role is the primary analyst for market trends. This role also provides all quality control on projects as they transition from Engineering and Store Design into the Construction process flow. In addition, this role is the innovation lead for the team, identifying and testing new approaches, tools, and technologies.

Principal Duties:

  • Manage the overall estimating process. Maintain the construction bidding cost database along with unit costs and provide takeoffs for new projects upon request. Leverage external tools (i.e. RSMeans, etc.) to provide assembly costs of unique design elements and custom projects. Support the bid managers by evaluating submitted costs against estimates.

  • Manage and provide estimates on future costs based on design elements and analytical data of historical Wawa costs and industry data.

  • Develop a unit cost estimating process for the company that allows detailed upfront cost reviews for engineering to ensure accurate budgeting. Compare Bid results to initial estimates and explain variances. Identify areas for cost control based on various cost trends.

  • Manage, maintain, and provide program enhancements on a predictive cost estimating and budgeting model based on historical Wawa data and industry metrics. Utilize the model to perform project and customized unit cost estimates to support the development program.

  • Coordinate overall bid schedule with all internal and external parties.

  • Manage the QC process for bidding by ensuring drawing completeness, landlord responsibility, and permit readiness. Lead the engineering handoff meetings and provide follow up with partners where necessary. Ensure completeness of packages to initiate the bid to build process flow.

  • Manage and maintain a contractor database. Review all solicitations for potential contractor use. Conduct quarterly meetings to discuss and ascertain future regional needs based upon build plan and existing contractor performance. Conduct contractor interviews and coordinate visits and reviews of portfolio projects.

  • Work across departments to complete detailed vendor scorecards for each project, maintaining a standard of review and provide quarterly analysis on contractor and vendor performance.

  • Develop division of work plans based upon lease requirements to support the bid and negotiation process.

  • Leverage data tools (i.e. Tableau) to report on quarterly construction cost trends. Provide detailed analysis on current costs against incoming bids to pro-actively identify changing markets and opportunities for our bid management and design team. Review commodity pricing and market movements against key products (steel, copper, etc.) and note changes or variability that could impact capital planning.

  • Manage and maintain a database of all owner supplied, direct sourced equipment and supplies.

  • Be the technology and innovation leader for the construction department. Research and identify emerging technologies in the construction, estimating, or management space. Manage any proof of concepts or prototyping of new technologies and systems. Be the innovation leader by championing new approaches, training, and providing change enablement for new programs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline preferred

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Commercial Construction Management, Engineering or Estimating

  • Strong knowledge of cost estimating, bid management, project scheduling and management, construction disciplines and techniques and drawings and specifications.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
