We are seeking a Construction Estimator I for our Detroit, MI office. Qualified applicants who require relocation will be considered for this job opening.

Job Summary

Under close supervision, performs routine estimating assignments requiring knowledge of basic estimating principles. Accurately projects the cost of upcoming projects. Responsible for conceptual, definitive, man-hour, and equipment factored total installed cost estimates. Duties may also include preparing economic cost studies, cash flows, and contingency analyses.

Essential Responsibility

  • Estimates labor, material and equipment costs of construction based on architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Collects cost data from functional representatives, subcontractors and vendors.

  • Uses estimating software to develop estimates with guidance from lead/senior estimators.

  • Creates cost models for cost estimating elements.

  • Prepares claims analysis and estimates.

  • Prepares independent cost estimates as part of change order process.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualification Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or Business In lieu of education, 4 years development of cost estimates in facilities construction experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills- Related experience is in heavy civil infrastructure industry such as civil, structures, transit or construction industry

  • AACE's CEP (Certified Estimating Professional) or equivalent designation

  • Experience preparing cost estimates using a variety of Estimating tools, including Excel spreadsheets, Sage Timberline, HCSS HeavyBid, and/or other estimating software

  • Experience in alternative contracting such as design build, P3s, CMGC - Former experience with a heavy civil contractor

  • Estimating experience and construction management responsibilities

  • Vertical construction experience such as buildings, facilities, and/or industrial is suitable

  • Experience working on large civil infrastructure projects desirable

  • DOT project experience

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time as necessary is required

  • Ability to obtain Security Clearance as needed is required *LI-AKGeneral Work Conditions Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.

This position is knowledgeable in building systems and construction methods specifically in a health care environment. A Mentoring relationship will be required. Essential Job Duties Work closely with RVP, C-suite, RFM/DPO, FF&E and IT in the development of project scope and price. Differentiates between priority business needs and "nice-to-have?s" in order to assist in determining project priority and to resolve resource conflicts. Works closely with user groups to learn all aspects of user requirements in order to provide effective advice and recommendation. Ensure projects are completed on budget and schedule and that the projects incorporate the latest Behavioral Health/Acute best practices. Have the ability to manage multiple, large projects at one time with some supervision. Develop/engage project teams using a competitive RFP process. Assist in guiding project through local, State and Federal building restrictions and code compliance. Accurate budgeting, scheduling, logistics, ICRA, ILSM from conception through completion. Follow the CAR/PAC process for pre-validation, validation and request for full funding. Take a leadership role in finding new methods/approaches to help execute work faster and more efficiently. Challenge assumptions and bring new ideas to the table that could benefit the entire department in executing our role. Maintain a vendor ranking and ensure we reinforce success by re-engaging firms that perform excellent work and value the relationships in the system. Collecting historical cost and schedule data to utilize in predicting future cost and time to execute projects (send to corporate at projection completion). Ensure all parties on the project have executed a contract and have provided all the required insurances prior to commencing work. Ensure the highest ethical standards when dealing with our vendors. Ensure vendors compliant with the terms of the agreement and that the business terms agreed are fair to both the vendor. Use business term guidelines. Job Requirements Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred.
