Position Overview:

This position will report directly to the Director of Consolidation and manage a team of two. Primary responsibilities include the execution of the Company's multi-tiered consolidation, financial statement preparation, accounting for the Company's investment and derivative portfolio as well as other centralized accounting functions.

General Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the Company's multi-tiered consolidation, including the assessment and consolidation of Variable Interest Entities (VIEs) and review of non-controlling interest calculations

  • Oversee and manage accounting for the Company's investment and derivative portfolio including: sponsored retail mutual funds, separately managed accounts, majority-owned sponsored products, limited partnerships, custody accounts, corporate hedge program

  • Oversee and manage accounting for certain centralized accounting areas, including parent company, fixed assets, stock compensation, and intercompany allocations

  • Assist the financial reporting team with financial statement preparation, including consolidating and consolidated balance sheet, income statement, statement of stockholder's equity as well as footnotes and other disclosure requirements on Form 10-Q and the annual filing on Form 10-K

  • Compliance with Sarbanes Oxley 404 internal controls, process flow, identifying risk and controls, and monthly/quarterly certifications associated with business processes impacting long term investments and consolidations. Make recommendations with respect to implementation of SOX compliance

  • Work in conjunction with Financial System Administration group to establish consolidation rules, proofs and consolidated financial statements utilizing Hyperion Consolidation tool (HFM) and the implementation of new accounts, cash flow transaction types, and systemic accounting operational changes

  • Support the Tax, Treasury, and Financial Reporting teams regarding investments and consolidation matters, including the research of new and changing Accounting Standards, the delivery of documentation to support quarterly tax provisions, and the delivery of support for quarterly and annual disclosure requirements related to investments, fair value and derivatives for the Company's regulatory filings

  • Coordinate delivery of support for independent interim and year-end audits related to investments and consolidations

  • Develop and initiate projects to improve accounting, reporting, and analysis to ensure that these functions are performed efficiently

  • Additional responsibilities and ad-hoc projects as requested

Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting with 5-8 years of relevant experience. Big 4 experience a plus

  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP

  • Previous experience in financial consolidations and reporting a plus

  • Excellent computer skills (notably Excel). Experience using Hyperion Essbase/Smartview a plus

  • Experience with SAP general ledger accounting software or equivalent a plus

  • Strong communication (verbal and written), organizational, and analytical skills required

  • Solid understanding internal controls and process flow

  • Ability to work independently on various projects to achieve desired results

Overview: The primary focus of this position is to work on internal audits of the Investment Division of Manulife Financial/John Hancock, based in Boston. The Investment Division is comprised of two investment groups. One manages investment portfolios related to the insurance business, and the other manages third party funds (i.e. mutual funds, institutional client funds), as part of the asset management business. Audits of these businesses cover a wide range of asset classes in both the public and private markets, including equity, fixed income, derivatives, commercial mortgages, timber and agriculture. The investment groups audited include portfolio management & trading (front office), investment operations (back office), middle office functions and compliance. The senior auditor is accountable for completing assigned audit work of all types and the delivery of high quality, professional, cost-effective, value-added and risk-based audit services. The senior auditor works under the direction of the audit manager and the audit director. The senior auditor will be assigned responsibility to complete specific components of the audit project. Responsibilities: * Performs all types of internal audits with a primary focus on operational and financial controls testing (Sarbanes-Oxley). * Completes audit assignments in accordance with department methodology and Institute of Internal Audit (IIA) standards * Manages assignments within time budgets and target dates, reporting any timing problems or budget over-runs to the audit manager * Communicates/conducts interviews with management regarding the risks being managed by business unit; and assists in developing control objectives, "what could go wrong" statements and audit programs to evaluate these risks * Documents controls to mitigate risks, writes and executes audit procedures to test the design and operating effectiveness of these controls * Assists in presenting audit findings and recommendations to business unit management; resolve issues and reach agreement on appropriate solutions to mitigate the risk/impact. * Assists in preparing audit reports, including executive summary and rating of adequacy of control environments, making practical and value-added recommendations to improve controls and the efficiency & effectiveness of operations; audits reports are to be clear, concise and well-organized, and issued within departmental service standards * Follows up on open audit issues until resolved, as assigned. * Provides on the job training and feedback to staff auditors assisting on assignments, and contributing to their development. * Assists business unit management by providing risk management consulting support, education and training. * Travel requirements range from 0 to 5%.
