Job Summary
The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a 12-month, full-time Administrative and Professional Staff position as Conservatory Concert Production Fellow effective for the 2024-25 academic year.
Note: This is a one-year position effective during the 24-25 academic year (July 1, 2024- June 30, 2025).
The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation's oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, jazz studies, composition, technology in music and related arts, and musicology. Oberlin also offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in conducting, the Master of Music in performance on historical instruments, the Master of Fine Arts in piano technology, as well as artist diplomas.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Concert Production, the Fellow will support a broad suite of activities in Concert Production. In so doing, the Fellow will work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff, in both the Conservatory and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Essential Job Functions
In support of the Director of Concert Production:
Maintain event tracking spreadsheet along with the Director of Concert Production. Identify duties for student workers to execute.
Regularly inspect the Conservatory venues, rehearsal rooms, classroom spaces, Finney Chapel, Fairchild Chapel and the Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse production equipment and for maintenance upkeep which shall involve:
Regularly walk through all spaces;
Maintaining inventory tracking system;
Managing student workers that are assigned to assist with weekly inventory checks;
Reporting inventory concerns (low numbers and damage) to the Director of Concert Production;
Reporting inventory maintenance issues to the Production Manager and Technical Director;
Submitting work orders to have production equipment moved to the proper locations.
In support of the Production Manager and Technical Director:
Assist the Production Manager and Technical Director with production logistics and event management, as needed;
In support of the Concert Production Office:
Accurate and timely formatting, proofreading/editing of 400+ concert programs for official Conservatory concerts, recitals for printing;
Work closely with Conservatory faculty, staff, and students to ensure correctness of concert programs;
Produce precise print materials quickly and accurately under pressure and with consistent disruptions;
Create and maintain event listings for Conservatory events including recitals, master classes, lectures, etc. This includes detailed proofreading and editing of the Conservatory Calendar of Events portion of the Oberlin website;
Create and maintain Excel spreadsheets containing accurate schedule of all Conservatory events for weekly staff production meetings;
Assist with scheduling classrooms and concert halls for faculty, staff, and students as needed;
Other duties as assigned.
Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications
Ability to accurately proofread/edit camera ready copy for recital and concert programs using Microsoft Word;
Working knowledge of musical terms and instruments;
Familiarity (working recognition) with German, French, and Italian languages;
Flexibility in work pace and style;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including thorough knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
Familiarity with Internet research;
Basic Apple and PC computer skills, including Word and Excel;
Ability to prioritize and multi-task successfully;
Ability to handle and move production equipment and keyboards (pianos, harpsichords, and continuo organs);
Experience as a stage manager or event crew;
Ability to manage a group of your peers to execute Conservatory events in a professional manner;
Availability to work nights and weekends as needed;
