Overview of Computer Technician

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) and College of Engineering and Sciences (CES) is seeking an ECE Technician/CES Operational Specialist to provide support for scientific laboratory systems. The College of Engineering and Sciences is highly ranked and led by respected faculty and staff, our college graduates a roster of successful engineers, scientist, health care professionals and educators. Occasional travel to the Westville Campus required.

Duties and Responsibilities of Computer Technician

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate teaching and research laboratory and ECE shop electronic test equipment and install, calibrate, and test new equipment for instructional and scientific laboratories and research.

  • Maintain inventory of teaching and research machines, parts, and equipment.

  • Perform other scientific laboratory activities assigned by the Department Chair and/or dean.

  • Order required machines, equipment, and parts for ECE and CES scientific laboratories and research.

  • Put together orders for equipment used in scientific laboratories.

  • Work with the CES department chairs and faculty and make recommendations for updating instructional scientific laboratory equipment.

  • Collaborate with CES departments at the direction of the Dean and ECE department chair to maintain instructional scientific laboratories.

  • Collaborate with PNW external service units as directed by the Dean and ECE department chair when beneficial and as needed, work to maintain instructional and research laboratory environments in the college.

  • Assist ECE faculty with construction and soldering of circuitry for teaching and research purposes.

  • Suggest new lab and shop policies for fostering student learning and success.

Education of Computer Technician

  • HS Diploma required.

  • Bachelor of Science or Technology degree in Electrical OR Electronics OR Electrical & Computer Engineering is preferred.

Experience of Computer Technician

  • Minimum of one year of experience with IT support required. (i) A&D circuits, control systems, microprocessors, laboratory test equipment; (ii) Electronics troubleshooting & repair (iii) Scientific laboratory management technologies equipment & specialized ECE lab equipment; & (iv) Report Writing.

  • Lab management technologies including Windows system administration & troubleshooting, software installation & imaging, LAN set-up, batch/shell scripting, Linux/UNIX, C++ and Python.

  • Electronics troubleshooting & repair, computer hard/software maintenance, AV equipment & specialized ECE lab equipment, Analog and Digital circuits, microprocessors, laboratory test equipment.

Core Competencies of Computer Technician

  • Knowledge of any and all Electronic systems including administration/troubleshooting, procedures/technology configuration/installation/startup in ECE and CES scientific laboratories.

  • Knowledge of Windows system administration/troubleshooting, lab imaging procedures/technology, and scripted configuration/installation of any/all software applications.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
