All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a "Great College to Work For" for five consecutive years. The UW Nanopore Lab is a biophysics lab in the Department of Physics that does precision measurement on DNA and the molecular machines that interact with it. We use a modified version of a naturally occurring nanopore called MspA to perform all our experiments. A single strand of DNA is a connected string of differently shaped molecules called nucleotides and these molecules block the current differently due to their differing shape and chemical properties. By recording the change in current over time, we can determine what the sequence of DNA is and this is what is referred to as "nanopore sequencing". Our research uses nanopore sequencing and SPRNT (Single-Molecule Picometer-Resolution Nanopore Tweezers) to improve our understanding of these biophysical systems advance medical technology. Position Description: The Nanopore Lab has an outstanding opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to support research in the Nanopore Physics Lab. This laboratory technician will perform routine laboratory and related work under close supervision of the P.I. or Research Associates, primarily biophysical experiments focused towards single molecule nanopore sequencing of DNA. Tasks include setting up bilayers and running single channel translocation experiments. This requires set up of laboratory apparatus and instruments, being able to read and record data and keep records. The job also includes minor lab maintenance and repair of instruments. Wash and clean lab areas and equipment; assist graduate students and postdocs in preparing lab equipment. Under the direction of the PI or graduate students, may collect and analyze data. Perform related duties as required. Requirements: One year of college with course work emphasizing laboratory science; OR one year's experience as Laboratory Technician I, or equivalent. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired: Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Biophysics, Bioengineering or related life sciences field is preferred. One-year experience in nanopore sequencing methods preferred. Familiarity with data analysis tasks using Matlab. Creativity and critical thinking are a plus.
