The Information Technology Department invites applications for Computer Software Engineer II to join their Enterprise Technology team. This position will report to the Manager of ERP Application Development in Information Technology (IT), and be part of a team that helps develop database programs in support of our Cloud hosted ERP System. The Software Engineer II will analyze user needs in order to architect, design, develop, test, modify, and maintain complex web-based ERP applications. Incumbent will develop or customize client-specific software. This position requires advanced analytical and programming skills and the ability to develop algorithms, procedures, and functions. This position will troubleshoot and solve complex programming problems using object-oriented programming languages and various API's. The applicant assigned to this role will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of a relational database structure and programming techniques using SQL, PLSQL, and related database management tools. Position will develop and maintain an integration architecture blueprint for the organization.

Position does not directly supervise other employees, but may occasionally mentor junior software engineers and/or student assistants.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of object-oriented programming with one or more programming languages such as Java

  • Demonstrated knowledge with an Application Development tool (IDE) like Eclipse or an equivalent

  • Proficiency with Linux operating systems and relevant OS utilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge working with API's and various associated protocols, such as SOAP or REST

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Relational databases and associated toolsets (SQL or PL/SQL), such as Oracle RDMS

  • Effective oral and written communication skills; professional customer service skills with the ability to share complex information with others

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in software design, development methodologies and analysis techniques

  • Demonstrated knowledge of designing user interfaces and writing reports using an industry standard report writing tool, such as Tableau or an equivalent

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive business relationships with others

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, time-management, and organizational skills to complete tasks with critical deadlines while paying attention to detail

  • Ability to follow and apply the University of Montana and departmental policies and procedures

  • Effective communication skills, including both written and verbal communications

Minimum Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Information Technology, and three (3) years of related work experience; or any combination of experience and education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), S3 buckets, and other related Cloud provider technologies

  • Experience in working with a Student, Human Resources, or Finance information system of a higher education institution

  • Experience with JSON and/or XML data

  • Knowledge and understanding of Apache Tomcat

  • Experience with Tableau dashboards and analytics

  • Experience with GIT repositories

The mission of UM IT is to provide and support the technological resources required for instruction, research, administration, and public service activities of the University of Montana.

Position Details

Position Title: Computer Software Engineer II

Position Number: 480000

Department: Information Technology

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week),

Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary: $30.789/hr

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
