JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

WE ARE

Seeking motivated mid to senior level Computer Science and Software Engineers to join our growing Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. This role involves software engineering and implementation of object oriented Python and C++ on Linux operating system and the ability to perform algorithm implementation and integration to support a variety of signal processing research processes and applications. Although this position demands rigorous characteristics from the applying individual, ARL fosters some of the greatest minds that the Department of Defense has to offer and therefore will also train/mentor individuals in becoming proficient in various areas of expertise.

This position will be filled at a Research and Development Engineer level 3 or 4 depending on your education and work experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors' degree in an engineering or science discipline and five years' related experience for a level 3. Additional education and/or experience is required for higher level positions. A Masters' degree or a PHD in Computer Science is preferred.

What you will do

  • Design and develop code to support signal processing for wireless communications, software defined radios (SDRs)

  • Design and develop solutions for various system level needs such as application development, libraries, wrapper development and device driver development

  • Take theoretical procedures and attempt to leverage them towards solving current national security based problems

  • Participate in leading edge / basic research, with the opportunity to take ownership of tasks and project, as well as contributing to the development of future research

  • Contribute to the development of the latest cutting edge analytic algorithms and be empowered to push those concepts into operation

  • Leverage your technical strengths and adapt them to new and adjacent areas of interest.

  • Perform real-time or post experimental signal analyses or modeling and simulation of signals

  • Enhance your knowledge base by testing algorithms on a variety of environmental conditions such as underwater (submarines, torpedoes, etc.), on land (antenna mast, mobile-mobile vehicular systems, etc.), and in the air (counter-UAS such as drones or other inflight systems)

Additional responsibilities of a level 4 include:

  • Manage multiple and/or large Software Engineering projects

  • Provide technical leadership within the division for Software Engineering programs.

  • Mentor and train assigned employees in the development of technical, project, and business development skills.

  • Exposure to:

o Atlassian tools or other Configuration Management software

o Configuration Management

o Quality Assurance

o Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment

  • Knowledge and exposure to prototyping, signal processing, FPGA, cellular, wireless, algorithms, communications and creative thinking

  • Software engineering in MATLAB, Python, and C++ with a Linux operating system environment

  • An ability to take your technical strengths and adapt them to new and adjacent areas of interest

  • Experience with Database Design, SQL, NoSQL

Our highly collaborative team is comprised of adaptable, curious, creative, lateral thinkers who are in both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds and multidisciplinary points-of-view.
