A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • This is a temporary position.

  • Responsible for performing and supporting research for teams operating within a service group, or product group and/ or project group.

  • Assists with the development, monitoring, coordination and implementation of technical projects as assigned.

  • Provides analysis, reporting and internal communication services with team members.

  • Develops knowledge of industry and organizational processes.

The four primary areas of opportunity are workingon Software Development, Firmware, Software Verification/Test, FirmwareVerification/Test. You will use software engineering tools and methods todefine requirements and then design, verify, and implement a product. Some software applications are used byphysicians in the course of diagnosing or treating patients; other productsallow for the analysis of data gathered during pre-clinical or clinicaltrials. Under the direction of a moreexperienced engineer, you will prepare plans for your own work, participate intechnical reviews, implement advances in current state-of-the-art technologyand identify opportunities for productivity and quality improvement. You will test for product integration andverification, conducting those tests based on design specifications, and willprepare formal documentation.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Undergraduate student with a sophomore or junior level in standing

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in computer or software engineering,computer science or related engineering major

  • A minimum 3.0 out of a 4.0 cumulative GPA

  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. on afull-time basis and does not require sponsorship in the future for anemployment visa

  • Able to participate full time (40 hours/week), in 1 of our 2 cohorts:

  • Cohort 1: Tuesday, May 28 - Friday, August 16

  • Cohort 2: Monday, June 17 - Friday, August 30

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following technologies is required: C,C++, C#/.NET, Java, Web Technologies, design patterns, Database technologies,XML, Perl, Python, MatLab

  • Prior work on projects in a team environment preferred

  • Relevant academic projects, internship or lab experience preferred

  • BioMed knowledge a plus but not required

This includes: * Products that restore and regulate a patient'sheart rhythm and improve the heart's pumping function * Therapies for movement disorders, chronic pain and diabetes * Products used in bypass surgery, stenting and angioplasty * Products for disorders of the cranium and spine, image-guided surgeryand ear, nose and throat procedures A Day in the Life We have four key areas of engineering internships available that arehighlighted below: biomedical, computer, electrical and mechanical Biomedical: Bringing together your interests in medicine andengineering, you will perform, and support research related to the design ofpacemakers, the development of cardiac pacing therapies, and the treatment ofneurological disorders/dysfunctions. In addition to collecting and analyzingphysiologic signals, you will construct and design the hardware and softwaretools necessary to perform experimental protocols. Responsibilities include: design hardware andsoftware tools that allow the human body's complex signals to be collected andanalyzed. Through use of other tools such as Labview, collect and analyze suchdata; conduct clinical research with patients to determine which features tooffer in a particular product or how to improve it for patients and physicians.After analyzing the data collected, evaluate fundamental signal characteristicsand test various pacemaker features. Write protocols for collecting clinicaldata. Computer: The four primary areas of opportunity areworking on Software Development, Firmware, Software Verification/Test, FirmwareVerification/Test. Electrical: We have summer intern opportunities forElectrical Engineering majors in the areas of product development/design,testing and quality assurance, research, and integrated circuit design. Underthe leadership of senior engineers, you will use state-of-the-art engineeringtools and methods to design/develop products to be used by physicians includingpacemakers, and implantable defibrillators, neuro-stimulators, drug pumps andother implantable medical devices. Depending on position, responsibilities mayinclude: perform design tests toevaluate and verify current designs according to specified results; use dataobtained from technician support to verify the functionality of product designand draw conclusions for evaluation; design product components, circuitry, orhardware, from detailed concept descriptions; troubleshoot and problem solveportions of a design project; develop test methodology and specifications andperform such tests; collect and analyze physiologic signals and other data;construct and design the hardware and software tools necessary to performexperimental protocols; design hardware and software tools that allow the humanbody's complex signals to be collected and analyzed; use of various tools suchas Labview, Matlab, etc. Mechanical: We have opportunities in both product designand manufacturing development/design, where under the leadership of seniorengineers you will use state-of-the-art engineering tools and methods to eitherdesign/develop products to be used by physicians on patients, or furtherdevelop the manufacturing methods used to produce those medical technologyproducts. ME: Product design/development positions offer opportunity to perform evaluations on mechanicalconcepts for future technology of implantable devices, and to develop andimprove manufacturing methods, systems and processes to produce high qualityproduct at optimal cost. Responsibilities include documenting requirements ofdesign concepts, evaluating mechanical aspects of prototype concepts,performing design tests to evaluate and verify current designs to specifiedresults, using data obtained from technician support to verify the functionalityof product design and draw conclusions for evaluation, designing productcomponents, circuitry or hardware from detailed concept descriptions,troubleshooting and problem solving your assigned portion of the designproject, and developing test methodology and specifications. ME: Manufacturing design/development positions offer opportunity to develop,implement and improve manufacturing methods, systems and processes to produce ahigh-quality product which meets design specifications at optimal cost. You will determine requirements ofmanufacturing operations to specify equipment, fixturing, and processparameters; develop plans to evaluate process repeatability and stabilitythrough equipment qualification and process validation; continuously improvemanufacturing methods, optimize product performance and reduce manufacturingcosts; assist with detailed cost analyses of particular manufacturing changes;provide engineering support to manufacturing operation on a routine basis;address product related issues arising on the production floor; recommendappropriate staffing levels to support manufacturing requirements; define andgenerate all required documentation in support of manufacturing products andprocesses, including engineering protocols, reports, manufacturing instructionsand procedures; and ensure compliance with GMPs and internal protocol.
