Computation Biologist/Bioinformatics Scientist, Senior

Key Role:

Use observation, hypothesis testing, measurement, experiment, simulations, and thought experiments to cumulatively provide greater knowledge and understanding in the field of health science. Provide direct, hands on laboratory and field support to science and technology clientele. Provide work leadership for junior employees.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience with bioinformatics

  • Experience in viral omics analysis with a publication record

  • Experience with large-scale disparate data management approaches and technologies

  • Experience with UNIX and Linux systems, including HPC environments

  • Knowledge of programming techniques in Python, JavaScript, or similar languages

  • Knowledge of current omics landscape and cutting-edge tools

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in machine learning and statistical techniques, including hypothesis testing and relevant software used in comparative and epidemiologic analyses

  • MS degree

Additional Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, CS, or related fields preferred; PhD degree In Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, CS, or related fields a plus

The ideal candidate will be a skilled professional with broad experience in NGS bioinformatics and software development. Desired NGS bioinformatics experience includes reads quality assessment, sequence assembly, variant calling, phylogenetic analysis, genome annotation, and analytical pipeline development. The incumbent will collaborate with CDC staff and Team members to define project objectives, implementation details, and project schedules. Working as part of diverse team of bioinformaticians and IT professionals, the candidate is expected to contribute to the development of standards-based algorithms, and analysis workflows; the application of those tools to emerging needs of the CDC; and integration of those capabilities into broader bioinformatics activities and software development efforts within an Agile environment. Experience with viral and bacterial pathogen genomics is preferred. The incumbent may be expected to assist in the development and presentation of seminars and training courses for the CDC bioinformatics community. This is an industrial bioinformatics group and although there will be elements of research to this position, the incumbent is expected to maintain a focus on product delivery. Responsibilities and Job Functions: * Build and support cutting-edge workflows for the analysis and interpretation of NGS data from sequence production to variant calling and interpretation * Participate in the technical development process of an emerging web-based bioinformatics analysis platform * Implement state-of-the-art computational methods, and develop innovative approaches to software challenges that touch all aspects of NGS data analysis * Conduct programming and/or scripting using languages, such as Python, R/Bioconductor, JavaScript, and Java * Provide expertise in algorithm generation and statistical and computational methods for the analysis of complex, high-throughput biological data. * Conduct analysis of large-scale genomic datasets acquired internally and through collaboration with others * Ensure software adheres to appropriate government and regulatory compliance requirements * Assist in submitting NGS data to NCBI for publication purposes and maintain the internally developed NCBI submission tool * Maintain expertise in the science and application of genomic technologies * Provide professional grade reports on ongoing sequencing, analysis, and surveillance activities * Work with software development team members to mature and integrate analytical tools/pipelines into user accessible tools/interfaces in UNIX/Linux and high performance computing environments * Serve as a subject matter expert to guide complex software development activities * Assist in the development and presentation of seminars and training courses for the CDC bioinformatics community Required Qualifications and Experience: * BS or the equivalent in a related field and a minimum of five years relevant experience.
