We are currently seeking a Composite Design Engineer, I to join our team.
We are seeking a hands-on composite design engineer to join our team developing a solar-electric-powered aircraft. You will support various company projects and programs across the entire life cycle of product development and design of all-electric aircraft. This position will be an integral part of the structures team working on composite aircraft, including design of airframe structure, material selection, as well as interfacing of those structures with various aircraft subsystems.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Produce airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs including preliminary sizing, materials selection, interface definition for parts and assemblies employing both metallic and composite materials.
Create and update 3D CAD models and 2D CAD drawings of designs.
Design analysis with specialized computer tools.
Prepare detail design packages for review and release to support FAA certification.
Evaluate static, fatigue, ground and flight-testing activities.
Prepare detailed structural & materials test requirements including test plans and results reports.
Create reports and contribute to periodic design reviews to ensure designs meet company requirements.
Support program reviews. Contribute to proposals, reports, and presentations where structural engineering is relevant.
Maintain objectivity and composure under pressure.
Be agile and open to deal with shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
Required Qualifications & Background
US Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card) required due to ITAR
BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering. MS a plus. Relevant hands-on/manufacturing experience a plus.
0-2 years of demonstrated experience in aerospace structural composite engineering. LSA or FAR 23 certification experience a plus.
Background in fiberglass and carbon composites design, including: composites stacking sequence, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, manufacturing, fabrication processes and machining operations.
Understanding of aircraft composite materials a plus.
Experience with 3D CAD software and composite ply definition.
Hands on experience with the composite part manufacturing and assembly a plus.
Design experience with primary and secondary aircraft composite structures a plus.
Education / experience or aircraft subsystems in R&D environment a plus.
Demonstrated ability to use MS Office applications.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Some travel required.
