We are looking for an exceptional Compliance Specialist to join our dynamic Legal and Compliance team. The Compliance Specialist will support the Compliance team on project-based work across a variety of products, services, and compliance initiatives, including compliance and ethics, insurance, and tenant background screening.

What You'll Do

  • You will work closely with the legal and compliance team and business units to understand the insurance and tenant screening products and services, as well as our compliance requirements, while also developing a deep understanding of AppFolio's compliance and ethics program. These relationships and knowledge will support your ability to execute on compliance projects in a wide range of the compliance areas relevant to AppFolio's business.

  • You will support the management, drafting, reviewing and amending of company-wide and team-specific policies and procedures. You will also support the development and delivery of company-wide and regular risk-based targeted trainings.

  • You will assist in conducting audits and assessments to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and company standards. Your analytical skills and attention to detail will be helpful in compiling reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

  • You will also collaborate with cross-functional teams to help support the implementation of compliance initiatives. Your ability to communicate complex compliance concepts in a clear and actionable manner will be essential in fostering a culture of compliance across the organization.

  • You will gain exposure to a wide range of compliance areas and have the chance to make a significant impact on the company's compliance posture. Your ability to execute assigned project-based work and identify and implement program improvements will be vital in helping maintain a robust compliance framework.

Reporting Structure and Location

  • The role reports directly to the Associate Compliance Counsel.

  • Preference for work in an office hub in Santa Barbara, San Diego, or Dallas. Remote work is possible, but we will expect occasional travel to Santa Barbara and/or other AppFolio office hubs (San Diego, Dallas) to facilitate productive relationships and collaboration.

Must Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

  • Legal and/or compliance background or experience.

  • Experience with drafting complex legal documents, policies and/or corporate communications; excellent writing skills.

  • Proven success or enthusiasm to operate in ambiguous environments.

  • Demonstrated capacity for critical thinking, research, and analysis.

Good to Have

  • Experience working with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and in the background screening industry (tenant background screening experience ideal).

  • Experience successfully managing and delivering large-scale programs/projects.

  • Administering a policy management system (familiarity with Workday a plus).

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary/hourly wage that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is $69,000 - $94,000

The actual base salary for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate's skills, education, experience, etc.

Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
