The Commuter Center Assistants (CCA's) are responsible for ensuring the Commuter Resource Center (2045 Armstrong) provides a welcoming, resource-rich environment for Miami University's commuter and relocator populations at Miami University. The Commuter Resource Center serves as a space for commuters to connect with each other and build community, and also as a study and meeting space for commuter students.

Average of 7-10 hours per week

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Armstrong Student Center to support and improve daily operations of the Commuter Resource Center

  • Become familiar with the needs of commuting students and answer student inquiries as needed

  • Serve as a liaison between the Commuter Center and the Office of Off-Campus Outreach

  • Check out lockers and maintain records of locker rentals

  • Plan, publicize, implement and assess a minimum of two high quality programs that build community for commuter students

  • Create a monthly newsletter with updates about events and short articles relevant to commuters, create complementary graphic designs

  • Support programming for the Commuter's of Miami as needed, communicate with officers about programming for the monthly newsletter

  • Hold office hours in the Commuter Center to answer questions and provide resources to commuters

  • Lead summer orientation, update materials and connect with parents and students to explain the commuter experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current Miami University student with minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0

  • Familiarity with campus resources, departments, offices and services available at the university

  • Energetic interest in fostering community among commuter students

  • Willingness and ability to work independently and with a team and take initiative

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills

This position has significant responsibility to ensure the health and well being of all staff and patrons due to the unique nature of programming with large animals. Also serves to provide facility coverage, and supervision of special events as needed. Duties/Physical Demands: Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Required to perform duties with limited supervision and will be required to make significant independent decisions. * Assists in the development of ongoing policies and procedures for the equestrian program with emphasis on current risk management. * Assist Directors in supervising barn staff. * Maintains safety records, certifications, safety protocol, and standard for facility. * Conducts daily safety assessments of the animals, facilities, and equipment, and recommends appropriate action. * Assist and train grooms and student workers to facilitate day-to-day care of the horses and facility maintenance. * Teach competitive collegiate equestrian athletes. * Instruct KNH Classes and keep records for final grade submission. * Responsible for the overseeing of cleaning and maintenance of all tack and equipment. * Responsible for the facilitating of clipping, mane pulling, and other show-grooming and maintenance of horses. * Assist Director in daily riding records * Assist Director in developing and directing community programs, horse shows, and summer programs. * Establish working relationships with individuals, agencies and groups that further enhance the equestrian mission. * Assist with admission visits of perspective students * Attend regional and national conferences/meetings. * Implementation of medical treatment and continued special care for horses as needed * Process all incoming invoices (credit card receipts, invoices, travel receipts) and maintain system for organizing and record keeping * Remain current and knowledgeable in all emergency procedures of the Equestrian Center and Recreational Sports Center * Assist with event coverage and management * Assist in the training and preparation of horses for lessons * Completes other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities * Assist with management coverage of weekend events and on call stable emergencies * Assist with the supervision of student staff, student interns, and full time staff. Minimum Qualifications: * Strong communication and organizational skills * Minimum 3 years practical experience in stable management, show grooming, and competing in horse shows * Previous training and instructional team coaching experience in equestrian sports.
