COMMUNITY SERVICES COORDINATOR - TENNIS

$25.79 - $38.08 per hour

The City of Mission Viejo is accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position of Community Services Coordinator. Currently, there is one (1) full-time vacancy in the Recreation & Community Services Department to be assigned to the Tennis Centers. The schedule and assignment will vary depending on the needs of the City including evenings, weekends, and special events. This is an FLSA exempt position and is not entitled to overtime.

The eligibility list established during this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time or temporary Community Services Coordinator vacancies to work in any assignment at any of the following locations: Montanoso Recreation & Fitness Center, Sierra Recreation & Fitness Center, Norman P. Murray Community & Senior Center, Marguerite Tennis Pavilion, and Felipe Tennis Center.

TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE:

  • Friday, May 10, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. - Recruitment closes

  • Week of May 20, 2024 - 1st Round of Oral interviews

  • Week of May 27, 2024 - Hiring Department Interviews

  • Week of June 3, 2024 - Selection announced

  • July 1, 2024 - Assignment begins

Your impact as Community Services Coordinator

This is a supervisory class with program development, administrative, and/or day-to-day operational responsibilities. You will plan, organize, coordinate, develop, implement and provide direction and oversight for tennis programs as well as foster cooperative working relationships with various public and private groups. Some specific responsibilities include coordinating the tryouts for the Pac Sun tennis league; scheduling the Hill & Canyon and USTA leagues; planning, bracketing, and overseeing tournaments such as the Konrad Reuland annual charity tournament.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Experience developing and implementing tennis classes and events at a municipal center;

  • Experience with tennis tournaments and tennis leagues;

  • Understanding of tennis and pickleball facility best practices;

  • Understanding of court maintenance protocols, court etiquette, and experience within the greater tennis community;

  • Ability to use tact, initiative and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines;

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and possess a strong work ethic;

  • Flexible self-starter who is enthusiastic, eager to learn, and works independently with minimal supervision;

  • Extensive experience operating software applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PerfectMind, or a similar Recreation based software program, and has the ability to easily learn and use new technology; and

  • Good oral and written communications skills.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Recreation, cultural and social needs of the community.

  • Principles, practices and service delivery needs related to the program area(s) to which assigned.

  • Procedures for planning, implementing and maintaining a variety of recreation and leisure activities and programs through community participation.

  • Applicable regulations and rules related to the program area(s) and facilities to which assigned.

  • Principles and practices of program administration, including budgeting, purchasing and personnel management.

  • Recreation site management, including coordination with special instructors and concessionaires.

  • Safety principles and practices, including first aid and adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, record keeping, business mathematics and basic computer applications related to the work.

  • Computer applications related to the work, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

  • Records management principles and practices.

  • Techniques of dealing with individuals of various ages and from various socio-economic groups and for effectively representing the City in contacts with users and the community.

  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.

  • Safe driving principles and practices.

  • Safe work practices.

When responsibilities include program development, knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of recreation program development, implementation, review and evaluation.

When responsibilities include supervision of staff, knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of employee and volunteer supervision, including work planning, assignment, direction, review and training.

Skill in:

  • Planning, supervising, coordinating, reviewing and evaluating a recreation program.

  • Interpreting, applying and explaining policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Handling medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic first aid and/or adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Maintaining facilities and equipment in a clean, safe and secure manner.

  • Using English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone and in writing.

  • Using tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

  • Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.

  • Operating a motor vehicle safely.

  • Operation of audio and sound equipment used in City facilities.

  • Proper pool maintenance procedures and practices (at Recreation Centers).

  • Red Cross (or equivalent) Lifeguard Instructor certification required for Coordinators assigned to a facility with a swimming pool.

When responsibilities include supervision of staff, skill in:

  • Planning, scheduling, assigning, directing and reviewing the work of staff and volunteers.

When responsibilities include significant administrative duties, skill in:

  • Recommending and administering program and project budgets after approval.

  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.

Experience and Training and License/Certificate

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in recreation, human services, physical education or a related field and two (2) years of tennis coordination experience with a minimum of one (1) year in a lead role.

License:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

  • Must possess, or obtain prior to completion of the probationary period First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Infant, Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificates.
