Hiring range is $35,300.00 to $58,400.00 annually

This is a technical field position assigned to perform non-hazardous and non-emergency calls for service. Work includes assisting police officers, patrol and maintenance of parking lots, enforcing parking regulations, assisting citizens, and investigating minor property crimes. Reports to an assigned Supervisor within the Special Operations chain of command.

Examples of Duties

TRAFFIC CRASH INVESTIGATIONS/TRAFFIC DIRECTION: Responds to traffic related crashes and takes precautions to safeguard the crash scene from further incidents and to protect crash scene evidence.

Warns oncoming motorists of existing hazards and divert traffic as necessary. Renders assistance to parties involved to insure their safety and wellbeing. Calls for emergency medical and fire rescue personnel when appropriate.

Calls for public works and traffic engineering personnel when appropriate. Surveys crash scenes to decide best course of action in handling the scene and investigating the cause(s). Evaluates crash scene evidence and testimony of drivers and witnesses to determine fault. Prepares and completes concise, accurate crash reports and issues traffic citations if appropriate.

Directs traffic, using hand signals to advise motorists what to do and maintains a safe and orderly traffic flow. Performs traffic control at construction sites, emergencies or special events. Handles crowd control at parades, street fairs, sporting and other special events.

PARKING VIOLATIONS AND CITIZEN ASSISTANCE: Utilizes a marked CSS vehicle to patrol/monitor shopping centers, businesses, medical complexes and city parks for parking violations.

Assists motorists with disabled vehicles such as flat tires and car trouble. Issues citations to illegally parked vehicles such as parking in a handicap space without a proper permit. Completes a uniform traffic citation or written warning when a violation is observed.

INVESTIGATES MISSING PERSON/RUNAWAY CALLS: Investigates and completes a detailed and accurate report.

Interacts directly with citizens and includes directing the complainant to where they may obtain assistance with their problem. Interview complainants and witnesses to gather pertinent information. Obtains information for follow-up investigation and essential information for BOLO and F.C.I.C. computer entry.

INVESTIGATIONS OF MINOR PROPERTY CRIMES: Investigates, collects evidence, and completes a detailed and accurate report of the following crime types when there are no known leads or suspects: petit theft, automobile burglary (not involving forced entry), grand theft (bicycle), and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Report crimes. Testify in court. Perform other duties as assigned.

Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

High school, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; E.G. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 0 to 6 months related experience or training. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Intermediate skill level in Alphanumeric Data Entry, Database, Spreadsheet, Word and Processing/Typing. Basic knowledge of 10-Key.

  • A minimum of three years customer service is preferred*

Licenses/Certificates:

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida operators driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Must successfully complete the department's CSS Training Program after hired.

Must become a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician within 6 months to 1 year of employment.

Must become a Certified CarFit Technician within 6 months to 1 year of employment.

Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication. Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence.

Ability to read, analyze, and understand the most complex documents; Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints; Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style; Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few known variables in situations of a routine nature.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under general supervision where standard practice enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work, referring all questionable cases to supervisor.

PLANNING

Limited responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work operations.

DECISION MAKING

Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and which would not only affect the operating efficiency of the individual involved, but would also affect the work operations of other employees and/or clientele to a slight degree.

MENTAL DEMAND

Moderate mental demand. Operations requiring almost continuous attention, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a habit cycle is formed; operations requiring intermittent directed thinking to determine or select materials, equipment or operations where variable sequences may be selected by the employee.

Moderately repetitive. Activities with slight variation using a definite set of processes or directions with some degree of supervision. Choice of learned things in situations which conform to clearly established patterns and modes.

ACCURACY

Probable errors of internal and external scope would have a moderate effect on the operational efficiency of the organizational component concerned. Errors might possibly go undetected for a considerable period of time, thereby creating an inaccurate picture of an existing situation.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Must have the ability to objectively analyze situations and to determine the proper course of action. Ability to obtain information through interviews and observations.

Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Must have knowledge of pertinent laws, ordinances and codes pertaining to related operations and violations.

Ability to show proficiency with proper evidence handling and recovery procedures.

Ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions. Also needs the ability to use independent judgement.

Ability to prepare accurate written reports. Must possess the ability to testify in court on related police materials.

Must have the ability to visually and audibly detect traffic hazards for personal and public safety. Ability to communicate to assist others. Must have the ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.

Verbally communicates clearly and politely to assist citizens in person, by phone or radio. Visually monitors and patrols assigned area. Visually and audibly detects hazards for safety concerns while patrolling an area.

Accurately records information regarding crash investigations, utilizes standard forms and issues parking violations. Visually monitors area for citizen compliance to local ordinances and laws.
