Definition

The Colton Police Department is recruiting for Community Service Officers.

Currently there are two (2) vacancies.

DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, is assigned to perform non-sworn, non-emergency, uniformed, law enforcement and crime prevention duties; parking enforcement, to take and prepare a variety of reports; may assist with traffic control; and perform other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Community Service Officer is a non-sworn position class responsible for law enforcement and crime prevention duties.

Essential Functions

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Interview citizens and prepare reports on accidents, offenses and incidents.

  • Assist in controlling traffic at emergency and accident scenes.

  • Assist crime prevention in the presentation of community and civic programs and projects.

  • May respond to radio dispatchers and assist sworn officers with investigations.

  • May respond to citizen calls for service.

  • Assist and provide information to motorists and the general public.

  • Impound property.

  • Enforces parking regulations, and impounds vehicles.

  • Coordinate and schedule service or repairs with City's building maintenance personnel or other vendors when needed.

  • Operate a computer terminal, printer, and enter, modify, and retrieve a wide variety of police records and reports.

  • Compile, tabulate and verify statistical data and reports.

  • May assist or perform animal control duties.

  • Report hazards.

  • May perform Police Dispatch duties as assigned.

  • Administer first aid as necessary.

  • Perform non-emergency law enforcement duties as assigned.

  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.

Fleet Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Inspect police vehicles for proper operation and safety.

  • Schedule routine maintenance and repair with the City's Auto Shop.

  • Perform minor mechanical repairs and adjustments such as changing flat tires, light bulbs, emergency equipment, or police radio equipment.

  • Obtain estimates and arrange for the service and repair by designated outside agencies or vendors for automotive repairs or installation of equipment.

  • Transport vehicles for maintenance, repair and wash.

  • Maintain and monitor vehicle equipment and supplies.

  • Jump start vehicles with weak or dead batteries

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Supplemental college course work in sociology, psychology, English, report writing, public relations, or related course work.

AND

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in clerical and/or public contact experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a PC832 within one year from date of appointment.

  • At least 18 years of age upon appointment.

Recruitment and Selection Process

Interested and qualified candidates must submit an application on-line at governmentjobs.com before the filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed and the candidates that possess the skills, qualifications and knowledge that best meet the city's needs, will be invited to participate in an oral board interview. Candidates that successfully pass the oral board interview will have their names certified to an eligibility list. This list will be used to fill the current vacancies and is valid for one (1) year. Candidates that are being considered for hire will be contacted by Colton police personnel.

Positions designated in the Colton Police Civilian Employee Association receive the following benefits:

  • Employees receiv the following salary increases:

  • 7/2024 receive a 1.5% salary increase

  • Cafeteria Amount for the purchase of medical, dental and vision insurance is $1,425.00/mo effective July 1, 2023.

  • Employees hired on or after May 1, 2018, shall have a maximum cap of $500 for cash in-lieu.

  • Up to 80 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service

  • Up to 96 hours of sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly)

  • 12 paid holidays (per calendar year)

  • 20 floating holiday hours (per fiscal year)

  • California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) for Miscellaneous Members:

Classic Members hired prior to 6/1/2012 benefit level is 2.7% @ 55

Classic Members hired after 6/1/2012 benefit level is 2.5% @ 55

PEPRA Members hired after 1/1/2013 benefit level is 2% @ 62

  • CalPERS 4th Level 1959 Survivor Benefit

  • City paid short term and long term disability insurance coverage

  • City paid life insurance coverage in the amount of $50,000

  • City does not participate in the Social Security System

  • Tuition Reimbursement - up to $2,500 per fiscal year after passing probation.

  • Six month probationary period.
