Community Resilience for the Waterbury Area

In July of 2023, a number of Vermont towns suffered from devastating flooding. The town of Waterbury rallied quickly to help impacted neighbors with mucking out basements, applying to FEMA, and much more.

To lead long-term recovery, Community Resilience for the Waterbury Area (CReW) was formed in August of 2023 to support residents of Waterbury and the surrounding towns. As a long-term recovery committee, we are here to help our fellow neighbors with 1:1 support, technical assistance, and financial resources to those impacted by the flood. Our focus is on building back smarter - moving mechanicals out of basements, strengthening foundations, identifying ways for property owners to deal with the increased volume of water headed our way through the increased rainfall that is Vermont's biggest climate impact. Member Duties : The Community Resilience for the Waterbury Area (CReW) VISTA will play a vital role in supporting the long-term recovery of the greater Waterbury area from the July 2023 floods, building community resilience through: -Researching, developing and supporting hazard mitigation projects

  • Increasing community awareness and education around flood risk reduction activities

  • Strengthening systems for volunteer recruitment, management and retention

  • Identifying and pursuing grant opportunities for community resilience Like most towns in Vermont, many Waterbury homes are built in the floodplain. Many residents of flood-affected homes are lower-income.

Their house is their primary asset and they would like to be able to continue living in it. To preserve these homes, these neighborhoods, and the financial stability of these residents, we need to identify ways to reduce the risks of recurrent flooding, and share these options with property owners.
