BASIC FUNCTION: Perform a variety of highly complex, specialized duties requiring superior communication skills, including assisting others in the workplace; serve as liaison among parents, students and community members; provide information regarding school or District programs, procedures, activities, rules and regulations; monitor and assist with various attendance and other issues; may provide work direction to others as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Community Relations Assistant I is distinguished from the Community Relations Assistant II in that the higher Level II position requires more education and experience, performs more difficult and complex duties, provides work direction to assigned staff, and is required to demonstrate validated test skills at a higher proficiency (see Licenses and Other Requirements). The Community Relations Assistant I performs proficient, advanced duties and works under direction.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. Perform a variety of highly complex, specialized duties requiring superior communication skills, including assisting others in the workplace; serve as liaison among parents, students and community members; provide information regarding school or district programs, procedures, activities, rules and regulations; monitor and assist with various attendance and other issues; may provide work direction to others as required. E
Meet with students and parents regarding student attendance and other issues; inform, advise or direct students and parents on methods of solving attendance issues; refer families and students to community resources and school administrators as needed; contact parents regarding illnesses or absences. E
Travel to various locations to visit homes to discuss and interpret educational programs of the school; transport students home as needed; communicate with parents regarding various student problems, attendance and parental responsibilities to assist students to obtain success in school; encourage parents to attend and participate in school and parent activities. E
Utilize superior communication skills to represent the district; plan and assist in parent orientation and education activities related to specific consolidated programs; conduct parent workshops and other events as assigned. E
Interpret materials and school and district policies, programs and activities for parents, school personnel, students, and others as requested. E
Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community; communicate with students and staff to provide and receive information regarding activities. E
Attend meetings; coordinate field trips and classroom visits as appropriate; assist with other activities including health, attendance, noon supervision, and clerical tasks; and assist in identifying resources and individuals appropriate for student success. E
Operate a computer to access a variety of records in the district's software programs; operate various telephone systems and other office equipment. E
Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: graduation from high school, an AA degree plus related courses and four years of relevant experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Highly complex, specialized methods of District education programs
Procedures, methods, techniques, and strategies utilized in dealing with sensitive school and community problems, issues and concerns
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Computers and other office equipment
Superior communication and interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
District policies, the State Education Code, and other laws, rules and regulations in regard to assigned duties
ABILITY TO:
Perform a variety of highly complex, specialized duties involving district education programs
Provide information regarding school or district programs, procedures, activities, rules, and regulations
Assure compliance with school and district policies and regulations
Learn, interpret, apply, and explain laws, rules and regulations
Observe and analyze situations and accurately determine an effective course of action
Communicate clearly with students, parents, staff and others
Understand and follow oral and written directions and work cooperatively with others
Meet schedules and time lines and maintain a safe and orderly environment
Maintain proficient, prescribed records and reports
Utilize computer software programs efficiently and effectively
Complete work accurately and as directed with many interruptions
Work confidentially with discretion
Provide work direction
WORKING CONDITIONS
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor environment; constant interruptions; driving a vehicle to conduct work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally, or bending at the waist; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment; lifting light objects.
