  • Sorenson Communications is looking for part-time community interpreters to provide the highest quality interpretation between American Sign Language (ASL) and English in multiple locations

  • Candidates must display a wide continuum of language skills and consistently exhibit excellent internal and external customer service. This position is available to current Sorenson Communications video interpreters in good standing and new applicants. All Applicants must take and pass a screening for verification of skill sets in order to deliver effective services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Effectively interpret between ASL and spoken English

  • Adhere to Sorenson Communications policies and procedures, and the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct

  • Provide excellent customer service while maintaining a respectful and professional attitude with customers and colleagues

  • Work effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues

  • Exhibit the ability to meet performance and customer service expectations with minimal supervision

  • Enhance interpreting skills through continued education training

  • Maintain, as applicable, compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements

  • Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the various interpreting needs in the community setting

  • Possess the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment in a variety of settings and locations

  • Fully comply with Sore attendance requirements

  • Effectively represent the Sorenson Communications brand when interacting with customers in the field

  • Work with intern students or provide mentoring when appropriate and as assigned

  • Be prompt and prepared for each interpreting engagement

  • Flexible with assignment changes

  • Ability to use technology to accurate reporting for billing, scheduling and service evaluation.

  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to complete additional and other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Ability to independently travel in the metropolitan area. Where driving is required, access to a vehicle, valid driver's license, and personal vehicular insurance at the minimum state required level

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time

  • Ability to interpret in ASL and spoken English for extended periods of time

  • Possess the ability to work in a various settings, both indoor and outdoor, with variable lighting and temperatures

  • Ability to independently travel in the local area


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Associates, Bachelors or advanced college degree preferred

  • A minimum of three consistent years working as a certified interpreter (NAD level IV/V, or RID CI, CT, CI/CT, CSC, MCSC, NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, or hold a state interpreter certificate at the Intermediate or Master Certificate skill levels or have the equivalent professional interpreting experience)

The Global Patient Services (GPS) Interpreter Trainee is a rotation-based 1-year job-training program for bilingual individuals seeking to gain experience and develop a professional career in medical interpretation. This position also allows trainees to gain exposure to international healthcare business practices, Limited-English-Proficiency (LEP) interpretation and American Sign Language for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. GPS Interpreter Trainees will be taught critical skills to become a professional medical interpreter and guided on the path towards national certification. Each trainee will be assigned a mentor who will support their development and on-the-job training. The program is structured by rigorous assessment and increasing complexity of interpretation levels. Successful completion of the program requires a language assessment and pass score at every rotation, professional development training courses, and end-of-program presentation to key leadership in the international department. Responsibilities: * Completing all onboarding and professional development trainings. * Go through interpreter assessments and quality checks. * Complete program rotations. * Helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers. * Explain hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients; make appropriate referrals; serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes. * Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation. * Adheres to hospital policies on customer relations and hospitality. * Understands the hospital's system of service delivery. * Written translations as required in patient encounters such as filling out forms and medical instructions, and medication schedules; administrative translations such as letters to patients, documents, and patient materials. * Support the office operations by answering the phone, taking requests, calling patients to confirm appointments, document encounters on the interpreter tracking system, do data entry, verify and schedule future appointments when necessary, do general troubleshooting, filing and photocopying. * Utilize on-line computer systems such as Outlook, and other hospital software. * Work with special projects as assigned. * Other duties as assigned. Education: * High School Diploma / GED or equivalent required. * Bachelor's degree preferred. * Bridging the Gap education program completion required by the end of the year of training. Languages: * Foreign language (Arabic, Spanish, etc.) or American Sign Language (ASL) required. Certifications: National Language Certification – Successful Pass of Written Exams (dependent on LEP or ASL): * Foreign Language Certification: Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) by Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) by National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) certification or other healthcare interpreting certificate; preparation for oral exam required within the year of training. * ASL Certification: National Interpreter Certification (NIC) by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), including the NIC knowledge exam; preparation for NIC interview, and performance exam required within the year of training. Competencies (Complexity of Work): * Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minima supervision. * Must be able to take appropriate action in a stressful environment. * Must exercise creativity and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients. * Must possess the ability to learn, use and understand clinical information systems as well as Microsoft Office and other PC applications. * Must be a confident, motivated self-starter and demonstrate flexibility, initiative, customer focus and the ability to handle stress. Work Experience: * Healthcare experience in a large organization preferred. Physical Requirements: * Requires frequent data entry, standing and walking. * Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds. * Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. * Requires dexterity sufficient to operate a computer. * May require the ability to operate various types of powered material handling equipment.
