The community garden program leader is responsible for development and implementation of garden and food science programming for local Girl Scouts. This position will serve as a program leader for all aspects of the community garden to provide a "farm to table" experience for girls, and teach basic cooking skills and safety. The community garden program leader will represent Girl Scouts, promoting the mission, goals, and values of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
This position will work approximately 25 30 hours per month from April through October.
Work with the program specialist to implement monthly program activities for Girl Scouts to engage in the Community Garden.
Research and develop gardening and food preparation curriculum for girls in grades K-12.
Deliver garden and food preparation curriculum to at groups of girls with up to 25 girls plus adults per activity.
Work with girls to plant, maintain and harvest the garden through the summer.
Provide a "farm to table" experience for Girl Scouts, teaching nutrition and food preparation.
Engage community partners to provide related programs.
Ensure safety of the participants and that the adult/girl ratio is met at all times. Administer participant evaluations.
Uphold Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington policies, procedures and standards.
Experience working with children (K-12).
Experience in program design and delivery.
Background knowledge and passion for organic gardening. Ability to maintain, cultivate and promote a successful community garden.
Working knowledge of good nutrition, basic cooking and kitchen safety skills.
Strong communication skills, including verbal and written, and experience speaking to small groups and individuals, both children and adults.
Ability to work independently and creatively solve problems, as well as a strong collaborator and contributor to a team environment.
Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and ability to learn new programs.
Ability to work a variable schedule, including one scheduled Saturday per month and other afternoons.
Ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop and reach, and work outdoors and indoors.
