What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $76,426 - $126,103. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site 3 days per week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. In this position you can expect to work on site at 101 W. Colfax Ave a minimum of 3 days per week. Occasionally, this position will be expected to attend community meetings throughout Denver which are held in the evenings and on weekends. Flexibility will be necessary in this role.

What You'll Do

Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees a number of services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of six divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of Medical Examiner; and Environmental Quality. As the Community Engagement Specialist you will provide department-wide support for public health related community engagement needs and opportunities as a part of our Support for Health Equity, Engagement, and Planning section. This includes attending and presenting at community meetings, attending community and public health related events, supporting other teams across our public health department in need of engagement resources and tools, logistical community engagement support, supporting and leading community advisory opportunities, working within a mighty team that directly addresses equity related topics and priorities, supporting the intersection of public health policy and community, and developing public health related events.

Specifically, as the Community Engagement Specialist you will:

  • Coordinate and support departmental community engagement opportunities

  • Includes DDPHE resource/service events

  • Collaborate w/ partners on events and other engagement opportunities.

  • Participating and act as point of contact for parades/events/etc.

  • Neighborhood engagement

  • Attends and presents regularly at neighborhood meetings and partner sponsored events around the city in the afternoon/evenings.

  • Work and communicate externally with community partners to ensure accountability, transparency, honesty, and intentional participation.

  • Participate, support, and partner with other Support for Health Equity, Engagement and Planning team members which may include:

  • Newcomer and All In Mile High city efforts on encampment resolution, newcomer (migrant) clinics/support, and access to care

  • Community Health Assessments and Community Health Improvement Planning.

  • Strategic Planning and Accreditation

  • Health equity related sprint groups and tool creation.

  • Works with Communications team, community engagement teams, and other divisions to consolidate, prepare, and provide community engagement updates and talking points for all departmental community engagement programs.

  • Support the development and integration of a Public Health Youth Council to present opportunities for youth to meaningfully participate in and advise public health in Denver.

  • Assists with the development of community engagement tools and best practices i.e. advisory group guidelines, event coordination and supplies support, and external resources/services.

  • Supports departmental efforts in planning, developing, and recommending policies with regards to community and public health.

  • Ability to attend meetings punctually and regularly across the city and county of Denver including early mornings and late evenings regardless of transportation type.

  • Being data informed:

  • Manage and develop databases of community partners.

  • Develop strategies supported by and utilizing qualitative, quantitative, and geo-spatial data

  • Cultivating and actively using a customer service, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and person first lens in interacting with coworkers and the public.

  • Other work as assigned.

  • Strong oral communication skills with an ability to communicate complex public health related information to our community effectively. Also, an ability to facilitate and push through difficult conversations with all stakeholders to stay on point compassionately, accountably, and intentionally.

  • Knowledge of public health project management. Able to coordinate assigned public health projects, work in scope, manage a project budget, adhere/adjust timelines appropriately, and ensure concise documentation.

  • Understanding of best practices in health equity, trauma-informed care, and the spectrum of participation in community as it relates to public health.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related field based on a specific position.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional experience conducting analysis and planning the administrative aspects of an environmental or public health program.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: None.

Note: Whereas a driver's license is not required, this person may need to attend in-person community events and partner consultation meetings around Denver, so the individual must arrange for transportation to attend such meetings should they arise.
