Description/Duties & Responsibilities
The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for multiple part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) positions at the Newhall Community Center (NCC) in the City's Recreation and Community Services Division. These positions will be working directly with the public, youth, and teens during the NCC Summer Program.
The center is a fun, customer-service-oriented environment, where you can get to know your community and expand your knowledge and skills to prepare for future careers. Your days will be filled with games and a variety of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, field trips, water games, and more, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the children in our community! Both youth and staff return year after year each summer because of the feeling of tradition, community, and belonging that they experience each year.
These positions may work up to 40 hours per week and are based on the needs of the program; Monday - Friday, and some Saturdays. Summer camp runs from June 3 - August 9 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Organizes, plans, and works directly with leadership staff to prepare activities for youth and teens
Supervises and leads youth and teens in activities such as arts and crafts, games, sports, water activities, and outings; attends and supervises youth/teen field trips
Maintains staff/youth and staff/teen safety
Assists in the organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility
Assists with decorating bulletin boards
Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs
Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth and teens as they arise
Maintains various forms, logs, reports, and inventory
Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents; follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
Attends meetings and training sessions
Performs other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Recreation Leader III/II
Education and Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent is highly desirable
Six months of paid or volunteer experience in leading and planning activities for youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps, or other relatable setting
Completion of college courses is highly desirable
Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered
Knowledge and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Ability to act as a role model by displaying positive and courteous behaviors that youth and teens will admire and want to emulate
Ability to maintain awareness of youth and teen's needs and respond appropriately
Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing
Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a workgroup
Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concerns with youth and teens as they arise
Ability to observe safety principles, make sound decisions, and solve problems
Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and environments, including inclement weather and in a pool.
Ability to work flexible hours
Ability to lift, drag, and push supplies and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionally

In compliance with California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
