Position Title: Community Cats Program Assistant

Reports to: Community Cat Program Manager

Location: Modesto, CA

FLSA Status: Non-exempt, full-time

Position summary: Assist Animal Services in Modesto, CA to help reduce feral cat populations. Responsible for carrying out fieldwork in Modesto, CA including trapping and working with caregivers of free-roaming cats for spay/neuter. Transport cats to and from the shelter's clinic and bring cats back to their colony locations.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in making reminder calls to clients for their appointments, and rework and reschedule last-minute changes in the schedule.

  • Keep track of loaned-out traps. Prior to trapping day, deliver traps and supplies to TNR locations.

  • Train new caregivers in TNR and use of traps.

  • Set up traps and check them throughout the night, as needed. Assist with drop trapping, as needed. (May take 3-4 hours in the evening.)

  • Keep traps clean, in working order, and clearly marked with Best Friends tag.

  • Keep plenty of supplies for trapping on hand.

  • Keep track of all food donations coming in and going out.

  • Coordinate moving food, as donations come in.

  • Pick up cats at prearranged times and places for appointments.

  • Get the cats (5 to 30 cats) to the clinic in a timely manner. Fill out all paperwork and ensure that cats are organized by colonies and any issues they may have.

  • Relay any relevant information about the cats to the medical and other staff.

  • Pick up cats from the clinic and return them to their colony (often requiring release), their caregivers, or their group by transport.

  • Clean the clinic area when cats stay overnight.

  • Clean traps after releases, for next use.

  • Assist in tracking of all spay/neuter surgeries done through the clinics.

  • Ensure that clinic policies and procedures are being accurately followed.

  • Maintain the transport van by making sure that oil changes and regular maintenance are done.

  • Drop off dirty laundry and pick up clean laundry; fold it and put it away. Keep a good stock of laundry available, picking up donations as needed.

  • Hang door hangers in the neighborhoods where the TNR cats are returned.

  • Be available for on-call shifts during the week and on weekends.

  • Do data and GIS tracking. Enter records in the Best Friends database in a timely fashion.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to think quickly on your feet.

  • Able to professionally advocate for Best Friends' position on issues.

  • Able to educate people about the process of TNR in a clear and effective manner.

  • Knowledge and experience with feral cats and trapping cats, and knowledge about how to safely operate cat traps.

  • Excellent people skills. You must be friendly, confident in your knowledge and able to convey your message clearly.

  • Good management skills. You will be working with diverse groups and individuals and must keep everyone focused and working together.

  • Accurate record-keeping and ability to provide monthly reports on various programs.

  • Proficiency with Internet navigation and a variety of computer software applications. Ability to learn additional software applications, as needed.

  • Proven written and verbal skills. Spanish speaking/writing a plus.

  • Experience in project management, with strong time management skills, organizational skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job is a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, someone who takes the initiative, and uses tact and diplomacy.

  • Willing and able to travel and work for extensive periods across the state and elsewhere to support the community cat initiatives.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50-plus pounds at a time.

  • Must be able to work in extreme weather.

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time working at a computer, doing repetitive typing, arm and hand motions.

  • Willing and able to work varied hours and dates, including holidays, weekends, and late and early hours and split shifts, as needed.

  • Must have current driver's license and a good driving record.

  • Knowledge of how to access and read relevant documents provided by shelter.

  • Must be at least 25 years of age.
