As the company's primary face, voice and leader in Mid-Michigan, the community affairs manager is responsible for developing effective relationships with local government, business and community stakeholders. The community affairs manager takes on a variety of roles to ensure the company is perceived as a world-class performer delivering hometown service. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Corporate reputation and image management thinks, acts and carries herself/himself like a CEO, customer advocate and company ambassador

  • Primary point of contact with strategic community influencers and stakeholders

  • Meaningful engagement and participation in community and economic organizations and associations

  • These relationships are essential in assuring the company has access when approvals are needed for franchises or permits, siting facilities, problem resolution or obtaining support from the community for company initiatives

  • Strategic and tactical leadership related to corporate philanthropy so that funds align with company and community sustainability priorities

  • Gaining favorable visibility and recognition through leadership and/or engagement in strategic community events

  • Plans, directs, communicates and collaborates with company executives to maximize the brand and key strategic relationships

  • A leader in corporate citizenship inspires coworkers closest to the work to participate in volunteer activities

The community affairs manager must:

  • Possess excellent communication, public speaking, writing and problem-solving abilities through which she/he assists other coworkers to deliver the purpose and triple bottom line

  • Understand the vision and mission of the utility and be able to effectively assist others in communication plans relating to the business

  • Make public presentations on behalf of the company

  • Be able to lead and work within a diverse team of communication professionals as well as cross-functional teams

  • Deal with ambiguity in known facts when representing Consumers Energy internally and externally

  • Serve as a media spokesperson for natural gas, electric or generating plant emergencies and must be adept at handling inquiries and working well with the operations team

  • Identify traditional and social media opportunities, develop the information, and disseminate through the appropriate channels

  • Assist local operation managers in communicating company information to employees

  • Be willing to work evening and weekend functions as appropriate; it is desirable for the community affairs manager to live within the designated geographical area

  • Be adept at the use of mainstream social media channels to connect and communicate with influential external stakeholders


  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field

  • At least 3+ years' experience in public affairs with a specialty in community/governmental relations


The Community Affairs Job Family is utilized in the Governmental and Public Affairs department of the Company. This job family provides advice, counsel and action plans regarding public affairs activities for local governmental and other relations in the communities we serve. It is also responsible for educating, developing and building company allies based on increasing the level of support for issues important to Consumers Energy. In addition, this team also provides crisis communications and identifies and leverages potential candidates for elected positions.

Nature of Work

The essence of the work that is performed by the Community Affairs Job Family is a wide variety of business functions, at times involving very specific business disciplines.

At the lowest level in this job family, the work performed may tend to be of a routine and less complex nature where the work responsibilities can be proficiently performed after a relatively short training period.

At the highest levels in this job family the work performed will tend to be of a complex nature involving knowledge of various functional/specialized disciplines where the work responsibilities can only be proficiently performed after a relatively long training / experience-related time period and often requires an advanced degree. The work environment often includes dealing with risk and limiting exposure.

Leadership, strategy implementation, management, facilitation and interaction with senior management will be markedly increased at the mid - highest levels of this job family while the need for direction and supervision will be markedly decreased. While problem solving and analysis will likely be required at all levels, recommendation and implementation becomes the norm at the highest levels and will often have a major bearing on the company's business. In addition, skills such as the ability to think on your feet, composure under fire and effective communication across all levels of the organization and with outside customers/clients become more finely honed at the higher levels.

Essential Functions

Local ambassadors that manage and foster the local relations of the utility for electric and natural gas operations, generating plants and project development. Developing relationships with Local government, Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development Organizations, as well as other community organizations are established to promote the company's core values and create support for company issues through the fostering of key external allies. Leveraging information and identifying potential candidates for elected positions may be necessary to build credible relationships with key local influencers and decision makers. Must effectively develop and present company information. Serving as an advisor and liaison with industry organizations, community groups, and/or governmental agencies is critical. Regular attendance is expected.
