Under general supervision, this position is the first point of contact through emergent and non-emergent calls for public safety service within the appropriate jurisdiction. By way of collecting pertinent information through active listening and problem solving, this position works to ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel and the community by dispatching police and other emergency services to incidents.

  • Answers emergent and non-emergent phone calls.

  • Assesses the nature of incoming phone calls and dispatches appropriate police and other emergency services to the scene of an incident.

  • Utilizes radios to communicate with law enforcement personnel.

  • Documents incident details quickly and accurately to establish incident urgency, categorizing the incident type, and obtaining the proper help for the caller.

  • Interprets caller location by using geographic knowledge, tools, and location tracking capabilities when available.

  • Processes checks for wanted persons, vehicle license plates, registration, driver's license validity and criminal history as requested by field units.

  • Performs various administrative tasks to include operating and monitoring CCIC/NCIC terminal, faxing information, researching records management systems and calling for additional services as requested by field units.

  • Operates a sophisticated workstation comprised of multiple computer systems, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS), state and federal clearinghouses, call handling including teletypewriter (TTY) and text-to-911 sessions, as well as communications systems such as radio dispatch consoles and recording systems with speed and accuracy.

  • Monitors departmental alarms and security cameras and responds appropriately, including prisoner monitoring by way of security cameras.

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and professional working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, representatives from other departments, and other emergency services agencies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, certification and/or licensure required. An equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties and meet the necessary employment standards may be considered.

Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience to provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Two (2) years call taking or emergency dispatch experience preferred.

  • Skill in learning geography and street systems to assist field employees and citizens.

  • Skill in using judgment and decision-making skills to rapidly evaluate situations, establish priorities, resolve matters, and pass on information, as needed.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a calm demeanor, under pressure, chaotic and stressful circumstances, in emergency and stressful situations while having multiple conversations and frequently noisy environments.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple events based on available resources using logic, critical thinking, and reasoning to reach conclusions and solve problems.

  • Ability to use training and policies to screen requests for emergency services; answering them professionally, recognizing if a call is received from telephone, text, video, or an automated data feed.

  • Ability to adhere to policy and procedure requirements that are stringent, rigorous, and unwavering, including confidentiality of information and trustworthiness while dealing with sensitive information.

  • Ability to operate highly technical computer applications.

  • Ability to function effectively and to take appropriate action in emergency situations.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to understand and be understood when using a telephone or radio headset.

  • Ability to demonstrate clear and effective communications with active listening, call control, judgment, respect, and empathy with callers that range from calm to panicked.

  • Ability to follow instructions, spell correctly, write clearly, remember names, numbers, and locations accurately.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check including but not limited to: drug screen, criminal history search, credit check and polygraph examination.

Salary for this position is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Work hours will vary. Shift work required. Days, evenings, weekend and holiday hours will be required.

Continuous Timeline: (subject to change)

Please note that this testing will be done by using personal computer equipment on the candidates own time. It will be at the discretion of the Communications Manager if in-person testing times will be offered.*

The full salary range for this position is: $29.91 - $41.87 per hour.

Tools & Equipment

Requires frequent use of general office equipment including but not limited to Personal computer, word processing software, database software, custom dispatch and records programs, telephone, call logging equipment, copy machine, base radio, portable radio, pager systems, calculator, switchboard, and computer aided dispatch systems.

Physical Demands

Requires regular sitting and talking. Requires occasional standing, walking, handling, feeling or operating objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling or reaching with hands and arms, climbing and balancing. Requires rare physical activity with lifting, up to twenty (20) pounds.

Must be able to hear the phone and audible signals from equipment. Hearing must be sufficient to use telephone and radio headset. Must have the ability to actively listen to callers for an understanding of their needs and situations. Must have the ability to focus on a single source of auditory information in the presence of other distracting noises. Must be able to detect and discriminate among sounds that vary in a broad range of pitch and volume.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

Environment

Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office environment. The noise level in this environment is usually quiet to moderate.

You may enroll in the Town of Parker benefits if you are classified as a full-time employee and have completed the eligibility waiting period of 30 days. Coverage will begin the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
