Engineers of various experience levels supporting a multidisciplinary team designing, building, and maintaining the ship control systems for the safe operation of US submarines. We seek highly motivated candidates across multiple engineering disciplines including systems engineering, electronics hardware engineering and software engineering. Candidates will support systems and component engineering efforts to conceptualize, develop, verify, deploy and maintain complex integrated electronics systems.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Support ongoing system and component development, with a strong focus on establishing, understanding, and meeting requirements

  • Systems engineering, analysis and modeling

  • Provide concept-to-production engineering support for various electrical and electronic hardware components. Activities include circuit design, component selection, electronics packaging, procurement, documentation, prototyping, troubleshooting and qualification

  • Test plan development, test execution and analysis

  • Development of required test environments

  • Software/hardware integration and formal verification



  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent


  • Electronic hardware and electronics system development

  • Diagnostics and troubleshooting of electronics systems

  • Real-time embedded system development

  • Distributed control systems

  • Control systems analysis and modeling

  • MATLab & Simulink

  • Engineering and requirements management tools (DOORS, etc.)

  • DoD Cybersecurity analysis and implementation

  • Design and/or operation of US Navy electronics systems (including Fly-By-Wire control systems)

The trainers are used to certify pilots for each of these different classes in operation and maintenance of ship control components. The trainer group consists of software and hardware engineers that design and modify complex mechatronic systems.</p><p>The D448 Trainers group has an opening for a software engineer to develop, troubleshoot and implement complex software systems on full motion ship control trainers. Ship control operator trainer software engineers serve as team members to solve emergent problems, implement fixes to improve training, perform upgrades, and introduce new technology to the training community. Ship control operator trainers are used to certify and train sailors on the ship control system outfitted on a motion platform.</p><p>Candidate shall be experienced enough to engage in a complex codebase and be able to contribute minor feature changes or fixes within several months without significant training or oversight. The candidate must be self-motivated and capable of working independently. The candidate must be someone who will see a job through to its completion and keep working when problems arise and schedules become compressed.</p><p>This position requires some travel to submarine base installations. Expected travel is 15%.</p><p>Total Ship Monitoring Systems Engineering</p><p>The Total Ship Monitoring team is responsible for the development, qualification, integration, testing and support of contractor furnished and government furnished sensor systems on new construction and delivered submarines.</p><p>This position will require that the engineer perform circuit card design and FPGA firmware development tasks. The candidate will also be required to perform technology investigations, trade-studies, identify and resolve risks, identify opportunities for cost reductions for Total Ship Monitoring System (TSMS) products. The candidate will also be required to interface with NAVSEA, vendors and other EB Departments. Successful applicants will be required to assist in the system engineering efforts ranging from initial requirements definition, system design through development, hardware/software integration, component qualification, test, construction support, delivery and post-delivery support to include analysis and resolution of fleet identified problems, assessment of obsolescence issues, and identification of components for technical refresh.</p><p>Responsibilities</p><p>Skills</p><p>It is a plus if candidates have familiarity with the following:</p><ul><li><p>Bash scripting experience and understanding of Linux systems, Red Hat, Fedora, Gnome, kickstarting</p></li><li><p>Git, Gitlab or Github experience with GitFlow process</p></li><li><p>QT Creator and GUI skills</p></li><li><p>3D modeling and experience with game engines</p></li><li><p>Understanding of video games and VR</p></li><li><p>Familiarity with Arduinos, National Instruments hardware or LabVIEW</p></li></ul><p>The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver presentations. Candidates must be highly motivated, work well within a team environment and be willing to interact with other engineering disciplines, navy customers, and navy personnel.
