Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Communications Specialist position. The Communications Specialist position is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $22.54/hour-commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Communications Specialist is a new role in the Amherst College Division of Admission & Financial Aid. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Specialist will help to implement a compelling communications strategy that builds on existing programs, channels, and staff, and which ties into the wider College's communications efforts, to create excitement and engagement across all audiences, across traditional and digital media. As a member of the Communications Team, the Communications Specialist will help to implement Amherst College's access and affordability message; communication to prospective students, families and others about Amherst's brand and value proposition; and communication to current students and families about financial aid policy and practice.

This position is eligible to participate in the College's hybrid work program during the pilot period (August 2021-June 2022) and can be done either as a full-time on-campus role or as a hybrid role with some work completed remotely in Massachusetts and some on campus work required.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Digital communications

  • Manages standard/stock response snippets/answers for email and other digital questions to Admission and Financial Aid

  • Assist with the answering and processing of email, especially during peak periods

  • Coordinate outgoing email campaigns

  • Manage updates to the website via a CMS

Communications program management

  • Manage print publications inventory

  • Manage print publications mailing with partners

  • Manage admitted student mailings

  • Support communications for April Open House programs, campus visit programs, transfer recruitment programs, financial aid newsletters, and other major departmental programs

Communications project work and ad hoc work

  • Create and design ad hoc posters, emails, social media posts

  • Creative work stemming from the Communications Manager's skill set (e.g. photography, video, writing, design, social media)

  • Edit communications coming from the division



  • Bachelor's Degree or in lieu of a degree, 3 or more years of experience.

  • 1-3 years of related experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills

  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills

  • Proficiency in the use of technology, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft Office

  • Experience working with or demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse community


  • Experience working with a Content Management System (CMS) such as Drupal

  • Experience working with a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) such as Slate

  • Experience working with design tools like Adobe InDesign and Photoshop

Job Summary The University Marcom Group leads and coordinates strategic marketing efforts for UMass Amherst to raise the institution's global visibility and deepen its reputation as one of the nation's great public research universities. Essential Functions * Build an engaged, informed community of prospective students, alumni, current students, families, faculty, and staff in alignment with the strategic plan. Contribute to the community through interactions that support UMass Amherst's vision and goals. * Collaborate and follow an internal communications process with the University News team to improve social media audience engagement. * Organically grow online communities as a champion of the UMass Amherst brand through identified social media channels. * Activate the social media strategic plan with supporting digital tactics whereas the campus community / atmosphere can be clearly communicated online (i.e. digital strategy can exist in the physical world (i.e. on campus and online) as well as the virtual world). * Generate measurement reports for specific UMass Amherst social media channels to track trends and understand key metrics. Use data to improve organic content efforts. * Work with University communicators to identify and establish strategic partnerships for social media community building. * Collaborate with faculty and staff to actively communicate opportunities and insights to improve social media engagement strategy. * Identify advocates and influencers among the student, teaching and alumni community within social media channels. * Use social listening to look for brand-building moments to create new forms of engagement. * Continually keep up to date on the constantly evolving social media landscape, learn and adapt when new features are introduced.
