    Job Summary This position provides operational support for the strategic planning, design, development, coordination, and implementation of communications strategies that support programs and initiatives in the Office of American Indian Health (OAIH). The Communications Planner will develop and lead the implementation of the operational communications efforts related to the Office of American Indian Health. The incumbent will plan, create, and disseminate content for print, digital and broadcast channels, including web, GovDelivery, print collateral, presentations, social media, and toolkits, and will coordinate communications strategies to ensure that our partners and the people they serve receive regular and consistent messaging around the work of the OAIH. To support these activities, the incumbent will maintain a working knowledge of issues American Indian public health issues.

    On occasion, the incumbent will provide technology support for community forums, interagency meetings, and other events. Common responsibilities will include: Develop, update implement, and evaluate communications plans for the OAIH current events, strategies and activities.

    Develop and disseminate content to meet the deliverables of communications plans. Establish and maintain a high-level of working knowledge of American Indian public health topics to support the development of strategic communications plans and content. Support OAIH staff to engage target audiences through forums, presentations, meetings, conferences and other outreach activities.

    Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years of experience in strategic communications planning, public relations, writing, and publishing for various print and electronic communications with American Indian Communities. A Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field substitutes for one year of professional experience. A Master's degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field substitutes for 18 months of professional experience.

    Understanding of communications strategies and the principles of effective internal and external relationships. Experience and proven abilities in writing, editing, and organizing material from diverse sources to prepare comprehensive documents such as detailed reports, procedures, correspondence, and planning documents. Ability to work independently and manage time, workload and priorities without daily supervision.

    Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with peers, leadership and OAIH partners. Experience writing in plain language, digital storytelling techniques, and editing for digital platforms. Experience working with or for American Indian/Tribal Communities.

    Working knowledge or proven ability to learn the art of web language and layout (ie, HTML, CSS, and web image optimization, ADA compliance, SEO). Preferred Qualifications Degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field. Lived and/or work experience with Tribal governments and/or American Indian health organizations. Experience and proven abilities in evaluating effectiveness of outreach and communication strategies.
