The College of Health is seeking applications for a Communications Director. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the internal and external communications of the college, with the ultimate goal of increasing the college's visibility and credibility.
The College of Health is in the forefront of educating students to become doctors, nurses, and other health care and public health professionals and researchers. The college is comprised of 15 academic and research units focused on the state's top health priorities:
Interpersonal violence
Childhood trauma
Substance abuse
Health care systems policy and delivery
Environmental health
Biomedical science

The College of Health Communication Director, under the general direction of the Senior Statewide Director of Statewide Health Programs and Development, provides strategic leadership to the college on communications issues. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the internal and external communications of the college, with the ultimate goal of increasing the college's visibility and credibility. As a member of the COH leadership team, the Communication Director serves as spokesperson for the college and provides advice and counsel on communications issues and policies to COH leadership.
To be successful in this role, you should have exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, with proven ability to supervise, communicate vision, and lead organizational culture change. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to develop compelling content across a variety of media and styles.
Exceptional organization and time management skills, with a strong orientation to detail and the ability to balance several high-level priorities at once. Strong ability to analyze and solve complex problems in a collaborative environment. An understanding of health-related academic programs and their contributions to state needs.
An understanding of organizational image and reputation management. Familiarity with strategies, procedures and best practices in student recruitment. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to plan, manage and evaluate communications, marketing/advertising and public relations campaigns. A highly developed service orientation. Ability to effectively manage a wide range of communications channels, including websites and social media. Understanding of Alaska's statewide media landscape.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of progressively responsible communications experience, knowledge of health related academic programs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience managing projects with minimal oversight. Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills.
Position Details:
This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage Alaska. This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
