Summary:

The Office of Career Development (OCD) in the School of International Service (SIS) at American University provides career advising, programming, and resources to support career education and mentorship for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in international affairs.

The SIS OCD is seeking a Communications and Program Assistant student position who will be responsible for supporting project coordination, program planning, communications, social media, and general operations under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Career Outreach and Programming. The office is looking for a proactive and effective communicator to help design marketing materials and programming to meet our students' needs.

Customer service and interpersonal communication will be a key part of this role and experience with both is highly desired. Experience with event planning and execution for student facing programs is also helpful. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate initiative, creativity, and problem solving through their past experiences and/or coursework.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create weekly career e-newsletters and other online information emails for students and alumni.

  • Participate in designing, creating, and promoting marketing materials, including designing graphics and editing videos.

  • Manage the office's official social media accounts.

  • Attend weekly planning meetings with the Assistant Director and other OCD team members.

  • Help with event coordination, including assisting with RSVP's, printing materials, communicating with external offices, including the SIS Hub, AV, and Catering offices.

  • Assist with mentoring program coordination and communications for the SIS Career Mentoring programs.

  • Attend SIS OCD and other career related events on campus to support day-of event coordination, as needed, including but not limited to: Help checking students in, help with room set up and breakdown, help with Zoom or Teams on virtual events, help to greet speakers and guests at events.

  • Coordinate alumni thank you gifts for participating in events and programs, as needed.

  • Respond to student, faculty, staff, and external emails and phone calls as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional Contribution:

  • As the class schedule permits, the Communications and Program Assistant will be expected to attend OCD events to assist with day-of coordination.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • 15 Hours Per Week.

  • This position is for Fall 2024 with a strong possibility of renewing for future semesters.

Salary Range:

  • $17.50-18.50 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduate students currently pursuing a master's degree in communications, public affairs, international relations, or a related field is preferred. Highly qualified undergraduates will also be considered.

  • Proficiency in social media account management (Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter) and strong background with graphic design are required.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and convey complex ideas clearly.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to gather and synthesize information from various sources.

  • Ability to take initiative and exhibit a high level of reliability and professionalism and exceptional interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations

  • Self-starter and team player able to implement projects independently.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Proficiency in web-based tools and platforms (Canva, Qualtrics, and Handshake) are a plus.

  • Experience and/or interest in international affairs is preferred.
