Summary:

VCU's School of Education (SOE) seeks a Communications and Assistance Specialist who embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion and will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. At VCU, we believe different perspectives and expertise enhance possibilities and solutions. This philosophy drives our recruitment process, so we welcome applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, who will contribute to an already diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.

The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) at VCU is a grant-funded center in the School of Education that provides adult education and literacy resources, publications, and training for adult education instructors and program managers throughout the state of Virginia. The VALRC's mission is to equip the field of adult education and literacy with essential skills and resources through effective training, publications, curriculum design, and program development through an equity mindset. We do this by ensuring that the field of adult education and literacy has the best available tools and training to help adult learners build a better future. The Communications and Assistance role is foundational to that mission.

The selected candidate will serve as the first line of communication and support for the state's field of adult education by providing high quality customer service through email, phone, and social media. This role also supports the VALRC by assisting with event planning and providing technical support for the online courses and training events that we deliver. This is a virtual position that will require occasional participation in in-person meetings and events. Key responsibilities of the Communications and Assistance Specialist role include:

  • Provide high quality customer service through phone and email communications.

  • Serve as the primary contact for the VALRC main phone line, the GED test help line, and the VALRC general email account.

  • Organize phone and email communications in a weekly informal report to the VALRC specialists.

  • Provide technical assistance for our online offerings, including monitoring registrations for courses, assisting trainers during synchronous online meetings and webinars, and supporting online facilitated courses by monitoring attendance and participation, in collaboration with the VALRC specialists.

  • Collaborate with the VALRC team to create reports on interactions with the funded programs it serves, including data on participants and requests received through email and phone communications.

  • Support VALRC's registration and evaluation processes by collecting and organizing participant information.

  • Assist in planning and organizing in-person events, including monitoring registration information and assisting with event logistics, such as procurement of space, equipment, and catering.

  • Maintain open communication with the VALRC team and attend regular check-ins or meetings as required.
