HII - MDIS is currently seeking a Communications Specialist to work out of their Washington, DC office.

The Communication Specialist leads, writes, and edits communications for an Information Technology (IT) project. This role is responsible for a wide variety of tasks and activities, ranging from developing and executing communication strategies and plans, to creating and publishing messages on complex IT information. As part of this effort, the Communication Specialist will work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) and senior leadership to develop effective communications which translate technical concepts and jargon into accessible, easy-to-understand prose.

The project that the Communication Specialist will be working on is a multi-year, multi-phased project, with a complex, highly technical approach. It involves migrating email from Lotus Notes to Outlook/Exchange, rolling out and implementing Office 365 including Skype for Business, Office 365 ProPlus, and OneDrive and deploying SharePoint Online. This project is expected to be released to over 28,000 users who are spread across the United States.

The Communication Specialist role is best suited for someone who has a strong background in writing/editing, prior experience in leadership positions, and experience working in IT or a similar field.

Duties and Responsibilities (to include but not be limited to the following):

  • Execute communication strategies and plans that effectively and efficiently communicate the project's approach, rollout, and execution of email migration, Skype for Business, Office 365 ProPlus, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online.

  • Develop and manage communications between project stakeholders, including senior leadership, architects, administrators, engineers, help desk personnel, IT security personnel, IT testing, training, and other subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Develop and manage consistent project style/branding across all forms of communications, in collaboration with the communications department.

  • Write communications drafts by working with the project manager, project team, and other project stakeholders, such as senior leadership, architects, administrators, engineers, help desk personnel, IT security personnel, IT testing, training, and other subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Coordinate and work with project manager and the client to seek approval on messaging.

  • Deliver communications in accordance with agreed upon communications plan.

  • Help drive awareness across appropriate departments, offices, and branches of all new initiatives that the project team is working on.

  • Developing internal newsletters and content for project website.

  • Use strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills for print, web, and digital communications.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree: Preferably in English, communications, or related field

  • Minimum of 4-5 years of related experience in writing/editing, communications, or a related field.

  • Experience with developing communications design/branding

  • Experience with graphical design

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent communications, research, and organization skills.

  • Advanced skills with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are required.


  • Experience with leadership roles is a plus.

  • Experience in IT is a big plus.

  • Experience with organizational change methodologies is a big plus.

JOB OVERVIEW Job Description Summary: The Division of Information Technology ( is the chief provider of technology infrastructure, services and applications at GW. The Division partners with stakeholders across GW to equip students, staff and faculty with the technology know-how and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Dir., Strategic Communication & Change Management works primarily within the Division of IT. The Dir., Strategic Communication & Change Management serves as the primary advisor to senior leadership on strategic communications, outreach and training development that supports the promotion and communication of our capabilities and invites strategic partnerships. This incorporates providing internal communications and training strategies for organizational change management during periods of digital and business transformation as well as external engagement to elevate the visibility and perspective of GW as a strong regional, national and international collaborator and innovator in higher education. This position will lead a team of communications and training professionals that develop and deliver comprehensive communication strategies to engage and support the value of IT services, support the creation of print and digital collateral, and support senior leadership in communication strategies and presentation material that deliver a more robust and engaging experience for our constituents.
