Requisition ID req29830 Working Title Communication & Outreach Specialist Position Grade 12 Position Summary

The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) has an opening for a full-time Communication and Outreach Specialist, specializing in Latin America-focused activities. We seek an individual with demonstrated excellence in writing for general audiences, communication and marketing, design and digital publishing, organization and program management, and building and maintaining community networks and programming.

The successful candidate will communicate knowledge generated by UNM's Latin America- and Iberia-focused faculty and students to broad audiences through in-person and virtual events, web content, paper and digital publications, and social media; plan and oversee LAII events for university, community college, K-12 educator, and community audiences; maintain outreach data and prepare reports on UNM's activities; and oversee marketing and communication for the unit. This position also supervises and mentors Graduate Assistants who support programming and works closely with a small staff and faculty team to advance the mission of the organization. K-12 programming is a main component of this position. The person in this position must stay abreast of K-12 curriculum standards to ensure K-12 outreach initiatives are applicable to classroom needs.

Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated marketing, writing, and communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively, both as a team member and leader

  • Experience with program development and implementation

  • Training and background in K-12 teaching and curriculum development

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies

  • Record maintenance skills

  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material

  • Success in website and social media management and design

  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite

  • Understanding of Latin American history, society, and culture

  • Spanish or Portuguese language fluency

  • Advanced degree in any relevant field
