Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute specific commodity objectives with an emphasis on quality improvement, technology development, on time delivery, inventory reduction, lead-time reduction, and customer focus.

  • Secure materials, equipment, services and supplies in accordance with the quality, quantity and delivery requirements of the requisitioning departments and company objectives. Commodity Planner II normally manages the more expensive commodities.

  • Develop the most suitable procurement and replenishment arrangements for commodities, including blanket orders, spot purchase orders, supplier stocking arrangements, P-Card utilization, and pull system implementations.

  • Initiate and analyze Request for Quotations with existing preferred suppliers when available. Provide sourcing direction on special and unique Elgin commodities or services. Verify material requisitions for accuracy in specifications, order quantities, etc.

  • Coordinate timely returns of rejected material and ensure that proper credit processes are followed.

  • Actively participate and lead in Lean Enterprise and Lean Supply Chain initiatives, Strategic Supplier Alliances, and Pull System Projects.

  • Keep inventory investment and inventory losses at a practical minimum. Achieve a reasonable balance between the level of inventory required to support operations and the cost of carrying inventory.

  • Evaluate Supplier Performance. It is the responsibility of the Commodity Planner II to work with the Supply Chain Manager and the Supply Base Manager to make certain that the supplier is meeting the delivery, quality, and service requirements that are needed in order to remain a preferred supplier for the Company. When these requirements are not met, it is the responsibility of the Commodity Planner II to put forth a recommendation to rectify the situation.

  • Achieve maximum integration with the other departments of the Company. Understand the major needs of the using departments so that these needs can be translated into material support actions. Support actions to include forecasting future demand and general business conditions.

  • Manage inventory turns and address slow moving or excess inventory items.

  • Provide input into commodity strategy development.

  • Resolve purchase order acknowledgement discrepancies with suppliers.

  • Resolve supplier delivery problems contributing to production line shortages. Use other internal resources as required to assist in resolution. Be proactive as opposed to reactive in preventing shortages. Be able to compile data into MS Office software (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) to summarize relevant details regarding vendor situations and propose solutions with cause and effect implications to Supply Chain Manager.

  • Be able to fully understand and utilize JD Edwards planning functions such as periods of supply, safety stock, minimum reorder quantities, lead time fields, and pull system set up. Dynamically utilize and change these fields to best support an evolving environment to maximize continuity of supply, inventory turns and minimize obsolescence.

  • Identify where Kanban quantities should be modified based on changes in demands for certain commodities and part numbers. Identify and take action to manage changes in required safety stock levels.

  • Set daily processes in place to work efficiently and effectively. Be able to identify issues and implement lasting long term solutions in order to minimize and mitigate the same or similar issues from arising.

  • Make recommendations for changes on scope of responsibility where the situation does not seem to meet business goals.

  • Perform other duties, assignments, and special projects assigned by the Supply Chain Manager.

  • Visit supplier facilities to determine ability to provide qualified materials and services.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelors in Business Administration or Engineering.

  • Five+ years purchasing or inventory planning experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of purchasing/inventory control procedures and internal controls.

  • The ability to represent the Company effectively and professionally in dealings with suppliers is essential. Be comfortable proactively calling and leading meetings with suppliers to address Elgin Sweeper issues and concerns.

  • Strong analytical, communication (both verbal and written), planning, follow-through, and accuracy skills are required. Knowledge of ISO standards is required.

  • Successfully demonstrate proficiency in independently managing more complex products and planning processes.

  • Be self motivated and regularly take initiative to independently manage commodity deck. Take appropriate actions to attempt to mitigate identified issues promptly. Escalate to manager after efforts have been unsuccessful.
