The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Measurement Standards & Commercial Vehicle Compliance is looking for a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1/2 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 - $23.79 - Overtime eligible

Commercial vehicle Compliance Inspector 2 - $27.14 - Overtime eligible

What you will be doing:

As a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector, you will work with motor carriers to perform safety inspections on commercial vehicles and their drivers to ensure safety on Alaska's roadways. Your work will make a difference by leading to a reduction in crash fatalities. You will also preserve roads and bridges through size and weight compliance by weighing and measuring commercial vehicles; your ability to identify unsafe vehicles based on federal and state regulations will allow you to take appropriate enforcement action including issuing citations.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is based at a Fairbanks fixed weigh station with potential to travel to various roadside locations throughout the state. Various shifts available.

High school diploma or General Educational Development certificate.

AND

Work experience that demonstrates the knowledge and skills required of the job, including written and verbal communication, use of general office computer programs, situational awareness, and safety awareness.

AND

Must be at least 19 years of age at time of appointment per AS 18.65.010.

Special Note for Option 1 only:

Must possess a valid Alaska Driver's License.

Appointment and retention in this job class is dependent upon successful completion of a background investigation that includes fingerprinting and obtain security clearance to access criminal justice information systems.

Incumbents are required to work irregular hours or staggered shifts.

As a condition of continued employment, incumbents must obtain and maintain:

  1. a Certificate of Commission as Special Officer issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety within six months of hire,

  2. North American Standard A and B, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications.


Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 2

Possession of North American Standard A and B, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications.

AND EITHER

Successful completion of the Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector Training Plan.

OR

One year of experience at the trainee level learning and applying the principles of commercial motor vehicle size, weight, and safety regulation and enforcement. The required experience is met by service as a Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 (Option 1) with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note:

Must possess a valid Alaska Driver's License.

Appointment and retention in this job class is dependent upon successful completion of a background investigation that includes fingerprinting and obtain security clearance to access criminal justice information systems.

Incumbents are required to work irregular hours or staggered shifts.

An applicant who has previously held required certifications and/or meets the eligibility requirements to obtain/reobtain the certificates, and who meets the experience requirement, may apply for a vacancy.

As a condition of continued employment, incumbents must obtain and/or maintain:

  1. a Certificate of Commission as Special Officer issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety within six months of hire.

  2. North American Standard A and B, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certifications within 12 months of hire.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 1 or Commercial Vehicle Compliance Inspector 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience.

The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
