Commercial Insurance Risk Control Consultant - Independent Contractor


EXL Risk Control is a leading provider of risk assessments and loss control surveys to commercial lines insurance carriers. We are seeking candidates who possess 10+ years of experience with a major insurance carrier and/or national broker in commercial Property & Casualty Risk Control, excellent communication skills, computer proficiency, and a commitment to meeting client quality and timeliness standards. Those with these skills as well as knowledge or experience in commercial insurance, inspections, or fire and safety assessments are encouraged to apply.

You will be responsible to schedule on-site surveys and provide risk evaluation and risk improvement reports to insurance industry clients. These reports contain information necessary to underwrite a commercial insurance policy, and may include recommendations to control and/or correct potential loss producing conditions associated with that policy. You will be expected to manage assignments you accept, successfully secure customer appointments within a local territory and complete work assignments on time.

You may work on special projects or conduct more challenging risk evaluation surveys or risk improvement service requests that utilize your education, professional certifications and overall risk control skills level. Insured businesses range from Middle Market to Large Multi-location commercial size.

Consultants will work from their home or office, and travel to local commercial business operations (i.e.) retail businesses, restaurants, hotels, apartment buildings and complexes, construction operations and jobsites, various types of manufacturers, churches, schools, etc. You will assess the risk for various commercial insurance lines of business that can include Property, General Liability, Workers Compensation, Auto/Fleet, Products Liability, Inland Marine and Builders Risk.

Tools or Items You Must Provide:

  • Windows-based PC with an image/document scanner

  • Digital camera

  • High speed internet access

  • Measuring device such as: laser, 100 ft. tape, or measuring wheel

  • Reliable vehicle

  • Auto and General Liability Insurance Preferred Experience

  • 10+ years of Risk Control Consulting

  • Experience working with major carrier or national brokerage preferred

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Safety and/or the physical sciences is preferred

  • CSP or ARM designations preferred but not required

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Loss Control

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Underwriting

  • Commercial Lines Property/Casualty Claims Adjuster

  • Commercial insurance inspections

Position Title: Specialty Brokerage Services Sr. Customer Service Representative (CSR) Commercial Lines The Specialty Brokerage Services Senior CSR Commercial Lines provides support to both the new business and renewal underwriters. Support may include rating, correspondence with carriers and agents, invoicing and all customer services tasks related to the accounts. Serves as a peer mentor and subject matter expert to less experienced SBS CL CSRs. Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance) * Provides a variety of support services to new business and renewal underwriters, agents, customers and employees for commercial lines business. * Answers agent questions via telephone, email or other communication systems. Provides information, direction and advice on our commercial lines products. * Provides quality customer service to agents in the day-to-day servicing of renewal/ new business. This may include handling of a renewal book as assigned. * Communicates CL products and coverages differences clearly to agents. * Provides clerical, quoting and other support activities to Specialty Brokerage employees/producers. * Processes incoming and outgoing correspondence including applications, quotes, policies, endorsements and brokerage agreements utilizing standard office equipment and procedures. * Maintains an operating knowledge of specific carrier coverage forms, automation systems, eligibility requirements and program details. * Binds and invoices business on a timely basis for applicable accounts. * Serves as a peer mentor to less experienced Commercial Lines CSRs. This includes answering questions and providing training, as needed. * Handles renewal process including gathering renewal information from agent, pre-underwriting and submitting to carrier, releasing renewal pricing to the agent, and invoicing and servicing the account until the next renewal date. * Maintains customer service standards as defined by procedure manuals, process documents or direction from SBS leadership. * Documents activity in our Agency Management system. * Prepares various management reports using agency software. Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance) * 2+ years of commercial lines experience. * Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Property-Casualty Insurance License within 90 days of employment. * Experience pre-underwriting and rating commercial lines of coverage. * Knowledge of the commercial lines market including the ability to communicate products and coverages in a clear, concise manner. * Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. * Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and other standard office automation software packages. * Experience in performing general office support functions. * Experience handling confidential and sensitive information/situations with ability to maintain professionalism and diplomacy. * Experience maintaining effective work relationships. * Previous brokerage experience is a plus. * High School diploma, GED, OR commensurate experience.
