Under the general guidance of the Correctional Programs Coordinator, the Part-Time Commercial Driver License Instructor is responsible for teaching and training driving skills necessary to prepare students to obtain a NC class 'A', or class 'B' CDL license.

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Must be duly certified according to Article 3, Chapter 90-A of NC General Statues and teach skills and abilities needed to pass the State certification exam

  • Must have a current and valid NC Class 'A' CDL driver's license and a current and clean NC driving record

  • Owner/Operator experience a plus

  • Knowledge and understanding of DOT, state, and federal laws and regulations related to truck driver, driving safety and health practices

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Hours and days may vary on a part-time basis within the Greene County Correctional Institution

  • Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional facility in direct contact with incarcerated individuals

Primary duties involve:

  • Develop and teach driving skills necessary to obtain Commercial Driver's License

  • Provide classroom instruction for students in proper use of equipment, and training students on safety regulations

  • Integrate classroom and driving practices using multimedia and driving simulation instructional resources into learning experiences enabling students to demonstrate competencies

  • Candidate must also be able to develop lessons/course syllabus, maintain attendance time sheets, rosters, and create daily assignments for students

  • Maintain class records; prepare and submit instructional records, reports, and grades established by institutional policy

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Programs Staff for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety which support the mission of the Institution

Teaching Performance

  • Teach a course curriculum appropriate to the teaching discipline

  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning

  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students

  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs

  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate student assignments

Evaluation of Student Learning

  • Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives

  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives

  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each nine-week session in a semester according to established deadlines

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances

Support of College Policies and Procedures

  • Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment

  • Teach Workforce Development Continuing Education courses in the teaching discipline as needed

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information

  • Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources

  • Comply with responsibilities as cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Handbook for Distance Education, Policy Manual, and Procedures Manual

Safe and Orderly Learning Environment

  • Maintain teacher/student relationships appropriate for a correctional program setting

  • Maintain accurate inventory records for all instructional resources

  • Maintain a safe, secure and orderly classroom at all times
