Renton Technical College welcomes individuals who have a commitment to teach and the ability to adapt instructional methods to a wide range of student backgrounds. Join our team as a Commercial Building Engineering Instructor. Reporting directory to the Dean of Advanced Manufacturing, this position is responsible for teaching a state approved curriculum for the Commercial Building Engineer program, and work closely with industry and the program's advisory committee. Other professional responsibilities include: maintaining office hours at times convenient to the students, participating in professional improvement activities, and other related duties as assigned by the Dean.

This full-time, non-tenure track position is scheduled for 40 hours per week of instruction and related professional duties for the Welding program. This is a PM position with instruction offered in person, generally between 3:00-8:30 PM M-F. This position is represented by the Renton Federation of Teachers (RFT) Employees Association.This positionis scheduled to begin Fall Quarter 2024.The salary for this position is $91,750 -$109,578 for a 9-month contract. Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include

  • Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.

  • Effectively teach the adopted curriculum for the Commercial Building Industrial Engineer program.

  • Provide for the orderly conduct of program learning activities, individual student learning needs, and the appropriate evaluation of student progress towards attaining the learning objectives.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and updating of the curriculum as required by the college and industry needs.

  • Work cooperatively with the advisory committee and administration to develop an educational philosophy and appropriate competency for the program. *

  • Participate in regular faculty meetings. Suggest and implement appropriate changes to strengthen the program.

  • Maintain a learning environment for the student in the classroom and laboratory by:

  • Meeting instructor responsibilities within the established job description;

  • Planning classroom and laboratory experience assignments for the student;

  • Assisting the student with preparation, implementation, and continuing evaluation of his/her training program and accomplishment of competencies;

  • Planning classroom and laboratory experience distribution in direct ratio to the amount of time necessary for the student at that particular stage of development to accomplish the competencies of the course;

  • Arranging the time requirement for all skill area to meet the school stated objectives so that it provides the student with opportunity to develop beginning competencies in each of the high-rise and commercial building operating engineer areas; and

  • Assisting in the recruitment process of students into the program and the job placement of the graduates.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership or participation in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.

  • Either hold, or be eligible for, vocational instruction certification. To be certifiable one must:

  • Have four or more years of recent successful work experience as an operating engineer, including operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting hot water and steam boilers, refrigeration equipment with emphasis on centrifugal chillers, and hazardous waste handling and disposal, and

  • Have taken, or begin taking after initial employment, vocational teacher training courses.

Possess a Washington State 07 or 07B or 07D electrical license, or equivalent is preferred.Possess a current City of Seattle Steam Engineers Grade 3 license, or equivalent is preferred.Possess a City of Seattle Refrigerator Operating Engineers license, or equivalent is preferred.Be certifiable to teach hazardous waste.Possess a strong working knowledge of the fundamentals of electricity.Previous teaching and supervisory experience is preferred.Understanding of commercial, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems with emphasis on high-rise buildings will be preferred.Ability to relate building blueprints to existing systems will be preferred.A sound working knowledge of commercial, numeric, electric, electronic, and direct digital HVAC controls will be preferred.A working knowledge of computer hardware and software as it relates to commercial building operations and maintenance will be preferred.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, Chinese).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The position is active in nature and requires standing, lecturing and demonstration of processes in a classroom environment. The job also requires some sedentary time when performing administrative program functions.

Degree Stipend:

Master's or Doctorate degree stipends are paid annually.

  • Quarterly Master's stipend: $967
  • Quarterly Doctorate stipend: $1,935
