Technicians are system experts that provide advanced and specialized knowledge, skills and consultation that ensure successful installation and restoration of key operating equipment for the multi-billion dollar steel business. This role is directly responsible for ensuring that the manufacturing equipment, with varying complexity, operates according to design standards that enable manufacturing specifications to be achieved which have a direct impact to the product characteristics. Technicians are the next (higher) level of reliability support once the skills of electrical/mechanical maintainers have been exhausted.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, analyze, and engineer solutions with engineers and other groups.

  • Responsible for analyzing, decoding, and making small PLC changes which would include schematic reading and drawing.

  • Investigate, diagnose, test, calibrate, install, repair and perform preventative maintenance on electronic, electromechanical/combustion/industrial gas equipment and systems throughout the plant, to ensure optimal asset utilization, productivity, efficiency and reliability.

  • Provide advanced or specialized knowledge, skills and tools to restore equipment operation and process integrity.

  • Provide support to Maintainers, Operators and Engineers to correct malfunctions, enhance performance and promote continuous improvement.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the manufacturing equipment, the complexity of which varies significantly from manual to state of the art/ highly automated, operates according to the specified design standards. Optimal operation is critical to the products quality and manufacturing characteristics.

  • To coordinate and plan for the repair of all electronic and combustion equipment removed from the field due to malfunctions or defects. This includes tracking the status of repairs, assessing the quality of the repairs, and maintaining stock of spare parts.

  • Responsible for continuous learning and development of work skills and technical through attendance of training classes with vendors, online, and on the job training.

  • Responsible for the successful installation, testing and commissioning of new capital equipment.

  • Liaison and interface with suppliers, vendors, contractors, OEMs, and other parties to properly select and repair equipment and quickly rectify problems.

  • To effectively perform and complete all assigned project work efficiently, on time and safely within a fast paced work environment.

  • Must be willing to work on-call hours.

The responsibilities for these specific openings will have a particular emphasis on the investigation, diagnosis, calibration, installation, and repair of combustion equipment and systems throughout the plant including but not limited to:

  • Flame Safety and Controls

  • Burner and Burner Ignition systems on industrial furnaces

  • Pyrometer calibration

  • Instrumentation (Flow, Pressure, Differential, Actuators, etc.)

  • Block and Bleed (safe pipe purging techniques)

  • Temperature Uniformity Studies and System Accuracy Tests

  • Utilization of Gas Analyzers

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 3-5 years of experience in industrial/electrical.

  • Associate's Degree preferred

  • Technical/Functional Skills:
    Variety of PLCs

  • AC and DC circuit analysis

  • Working knowledge of electrical/electrical systems/instrumentation/sensors/testing equipment

Purpose and Scope: The Technician Trainee position is a developmental position in the field of electrical/electronics engineering technology that will yield system experts that can provide advanced and specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to ensure successful installation and restoration of key operating equipment for the steel business. The position exists to develop the technical and working knowledge of the Technician Trainee so that they may ultimately advance to a Technician role, solving problems and completing improvement projects on their own. Depending on the initial skills/experience that the Technician Trainee brings, the development process may last up to 4 years before final consideration/evaluation for advancement to the Technician Role. Responsibilities Include: * Responsible for continuous learning and development of technical and working skills through attendance of training classes with vendors, online, Senior Technicians, and successful completion of on the job training. * Areas of exposure/development include: PLC Hardware/Software, AC/DC Circuit Analysis, Radio Controlled Equipment, AC/DC Drives, Instrumentation & Process Control, Electronic Testing/Repair, Electrical Measurements, Communications/Networking, Cranes/Crane Control, Drive Setup, Combustion Controls, Specialized Sensors, Basic Hydraulics/Pneumatics, Basic Robotics, etc. * Provide support to Technicians, Maintainers, Operators, and Engineers to correct malfunctions, enhance performance and promote continuous improvement. * Perform all assigned duties under the guidance of the assigned Senior Technician, which may involve: * Attending training classes * Assisting with troubleshooting/repairs of electrical and process control problems * Assisting with calibrations and preventative maintenance on electronic, electromechanical and combustion equipment * Completing projects assigned as part of the development process * To begin utilizing technical and working skills obtained by troubleshooting and subsequently solving/repairing electronic and electrical control system problems. * To participate in both technical and working skill set tests/evaluations at the request of the Senior Technician or Manager. * To effectively perform and complete all assigned project work efficiently, on time and safely within a fast paced work environment. Key Technical/Functional Skills: * Basic knowledge of Hydraulics/Pneumatic Systems * Technical knowledge of AC and DC Circuit Analysis * Working knowledge of Electrical/Electronic Test Equipment/Meters * Technical knowledge of Electrical/Electronic Systems Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma with at least 2 years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: Associate's Degree in Electrical or Electronic Technology with 0-2 years of relevant experience.
