JOB OVERVIEW:

Support and consistently reinforce the Mission and Core Values of M&D Mechanical Contractors, Inc. A welder is responsible for joining carbon steel and stainless-steel metal parts using various welding techniques, such as stick, TIG, MIG, and arc welding, to ensure they are structurally sound and can withstand specified pressures and forces. Their duties involve interpreting blueprints or welding process specifications, pipe surface preparation, setting up and maintaining welding equipment, cutting metal plates and pipes using powered tools, and inspecting welded surfaces to assess work quality and conformity to specifications. They must have a deep understanding of metallurgy, welding specifications, code compliance and be proficient working with various welding equipment and tools. Ensuring safety and compliance with regulations to protect themselves and others from welding hazards is a critical aspect of a welder's role. This role requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and meticulous attention to detail to produce high-quality, durable welds.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrates an "ownership" mindset and be ultimately responsible for the success or status of the respective assigned work.

  • Be knowledgeable of fabricating components as related to steel fabrication (meeting the minimum for SSCI industry standards).

  • Assist the Foreman/Supervisor with meeting or exceeding job/project deadlines and budgets.

  • Timesheets: submit daily time and attendance (Timesheets).

  • Safety / JSA: coordinate and carry out with Foreman and/or Safety Officer all safety/PPE procedures/policies and incidents/investigations that drive a culture of safety for yourself and individuals working in welding locations

  • Participate in providing input to daily JSAs submitted by Foreman or Superintendent.

  • Effectively working with Others in a clear and respectful manner.

  • Assist in coaching and training, provide respectful communications to the apprentice to encourage growth in knowledge and experience.

  • Effectively coordinate with Foreman/Superintendents for understanding and the executing of work.

  • Individuals must be able to work side-by-side on projects with professional communications and other trades.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Review drawings/blueprints to understand the work and measurements prior to starting to include welding procedures, welding symbols

  • Communicate proactively with Foreman and/or superintendent.

  • Ensure individual welder stamp is accurately executed on each pipe weld.

  • Ensure the quality of pipe fitting supports quality welding work prior to work proceeding, such as gaps, accessibility, tacking, and materials.

  • Capable of welding small and large components, straight or curved, horizontal, or vertical, overhead, and structural or pipe.

  • Secure and fasten structural components (using clamps, braces, jack stands, etc.).

  • Inspect and evaluate welds to ensure they are free of defect and conform to set specifications, initiate repairs as required.

  • Have a working knowledge of specifications for examples: UT guide, WPS, weld size, weld leg, pre-heat, MT, x-ray, NDE, and generally meeting client's specifications).

  • Demonstrated ability to apply varied welding methods GMAW (gas and metal arc welding), FCAW (flux core arc welding) and SMAW (shielded and metal arc welding) on both carbon steel and/or stainless-steel.

  • Weld Quality includes leak check, NDE and hydro testing, weld strength and weld integrity (x-ray)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to approach different types of welds depending on the type of material (project) and equipment used.

  • Order consumable material and equipment as required on a project

  • Demonstrated mastery of all equipment used with welding.

  • Maintain and calibrate machinery for industrial welding, as required by the manufacturer.

  • Knowledgeable of how to preheat and correctly use rosebud and temperature sticks.

  • Knowledgeable in the use of additional equipment used in welding: Angle grinders, buffing wheel, wire brush, c-clamps, ball peen hammer, round and flat file, needle nose and linesman cutting pliers, flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers, levels, squares, shovels, and common hand and power tools.

  • Support area Foreman by identifying need for larger equipment, i.e., forklifts, cranes, manlifts, and rigging.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

  • Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent, or trade school

  • Completed individual M&D apprentice program levels

  • Carbon Stick, Carbon TIG, Stainless Steel and MIG
  • Previous welding experience - preferred

  • Required to read and write English, follow verbal instructions and use simple math

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic understanding of pipe (carbon and stainless steel) systems and components

  • Ability to read and comprehend project drawings components

  • Must be able to self-check own work to ensure accuracy and completeness

  • Must be able to prioritize multiple task and schedule requirements

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

Employee may be required to do the following: climbing ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level; maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds structures, etc.; reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing; sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; crawling; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

Employee may be required to do the following: following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; planning work and selecting proper tools; comparing and understanding differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures, and objects; picturing and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked, following oral and/or written directions, plans and blueprints; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.

WORK ENVIROMENT FACTORS:

  • Location: industrial construction sites and/or office environment

  • Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways

  • Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately indoor climate; various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc., potential exposure to chemical substances.
