The Reed College of Media (COM) at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a College Recruitment Specialist. This position will be responsible for assisting the COM Dean and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs in activities to recruit and retain students interested in careers in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations, Sports and Adventure Media, Interactive Design for Media and allied media fields. The successful candidate will develop and implement recruitment strategies and communication plans in conjunction with the COM administration, faculty, and staff and update these plans frequently. These responsibilities include overnight travel and work on weekends and evenings

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Provide admissions information and services to prospective students.

  • Research and identify target populations for recruitment and develop visitation schedules; visit in-state and/or out-of-state target schools, agencies or conferences to meet with prospective students, teachers and administrators; coordinate visits for COM faculty.

  • Represent the COM at college fairs and other WVU recruitment events, including Discover and Decide WVU Days, Distinguished Scholars events, Go First Fridays, and other central events.

  • Discuss COM program offerings to prospective students and parents and answer their questions concerning curriculum, enrollment procedures and/or student life.

  • Disseminate timely information via appropriate communication venues to prospective and/or continuing students such as admission, housing and scholarship/financial aid applications.

  • Meet with prospective students and/or parent/guardians on an individual basis (for both on-campus and off-campus events), answer questions, and discuss academic opportunities. Provide on-site tours of COM facilities.

  • Assist in developing recruitment marketing materials such as letters, post-card mailings, brochures, emails, web content and social media communications.

  • Participate in University-sponsored recruitment and communication committee meetings.

  • Oversee summer Media Camps which bring high school students to campus for immersion programs in current media practice and skill development.

  • Coordinate teacher workshops to build relationships with secondary schools in WV and surrounding states.

  • Coordinate K-12 groups coming to campus for media-related workshops and learning opportunities

  • Supervise Graduate Assistant and student worker in support of program objectives.

  • Serve in other capacities regarding recruitment issues and events as requested by the Dean or Assistant Deans.

  • Bachelor's degree ideally in Journalism, Strategic communications (Advertising or PR) or another applied communications discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's preferred.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of Experience in student admissions, advising, recruitment or retention.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of Experience in sales and/or customer service.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of Familiarity with statistical concepts and analysis.

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in professional social media communications.

  • Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to work as a team member to accomplish unit goals.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, problem-solve, collaborate, and work independently.

  • Excellent computer skills (writing and data bases).

This position advises approximately 300 undergraduate students in the College of Media and shared majors. The incumbent will conduct one-on-one advising sessions with students to explore career goals, explain program requirements, and provide a detailed course plan based on the student's strengths and career aspirations. In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: * Employs a combination of appreciative, developmental, intrusive, and prescriptive academic advising to assist students in persistence and completion of degree. * Assist students with transfer/transient credits, conduct a preliminary evaluation of transfer credits, and identify how work completed applies to WVU programs of study. * Explain to students' which courses to select based on their financial aid package and build schedules with the necessary degree pursuant courses * Analyze students' schedules to ensure they will pass a Veteran or a Financial aid audit; make recommendations on alternate coursework that will allow students to maintain their aid and progress toward graduation. * Provides advising and counseling to students who are on probationary, on deferred suspension or who have been reinstated after suspension. * Monitor students' progress in the major (90-credit checks, benchmark reports), early alert, and mid-semester grades. Based on the data collected, contact students and make recommendations for graduation. * Identify and provide timely outreach for at-risk students to assist in college/university retention initiatives. Provide follow-up advising for those students. * Assists students in analyzing and identifying solutions to academic problems; identify personal issues and refer students to appropriate resources/representatives/units (e.g. assistant dean, associate dean, academic chairpersons, Office of Student Life, etc.). * Researches and interprets the WVU Undergraduate Catalog and College of Media policies and procedures for the purpose of assisting students matriculating to degree programs, academic majors and academic minors. * Utilizes student information systems (i.e. Banner and Navigate) to track and monitor academic history and in-progress work. * Assists students with the transition from high school to college through formal convocation and orientation programs. * Teach MDIA 191 to First-Time Freshmen or to students on academic probation as necessary. * Serves on college- and/or university-wide task forces/committees that impact student success at WVU. Actively participates in college/university workshops on advising and undergraduate performance. * Master's degree in relevant field OR equivalent combination of education and experience. * A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the following: * Advising or counseling students * Academic or student support services * Student information systems * Experience with advising. * Excellent organizational skills for scheduling and records maintenance. * Experience with university policies and procedures and established rules and regulations. * Ability to work with an academically and culturally diverse group of students. * Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) * Experience with student information systems (i.e. Banner, Student Success Collaborative Campus) * Experience with different forms of academic advising (appreciative, developmental, intrusive, etc.) West Virginia University Morgantown WV
