College Intern, Finance

Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita. The Finance intern will support various financial tasks such as: journal entries, reconciliations, financial research, tracking and analysis.

SALARY:

$18.57 - $23.52/hour (Undergrad Level)

$24.78 - $29.73/hour (Graduate Level)

20-30 hours per week is preferred. Expected duration of this internship is from May 2024 to May 2025.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct financial research and data verification

• Assist with the preparation of reconciliations and journal entries

• Conduct financial analysis for department and/or division budgets

• Draft, proof, and prepare memos, reports, and analyses

• Analyze and prepare recommendations related to process efficiency

• Attend various weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings

Education and Experience

If you are a current undergraduate or graduate student or recent graduate in the fields of Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or a related field and are interested in gaining meaningful, hands-on work experience at the local government level, this may be the program for you.

Knowledge and Abilities

• General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations

• General understanding of accounting concepts and financial analysis

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Research techniques, survey methods, and data collection

• Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities

• Excellent oral and written communications

• Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community

• Financial system experience highly desired

• Computer experience, including Outlook, Word, and Excel

Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
