The College Experience Program, which takes place at the College of St. Rose in conjunction with Living Resources, offers young adults with intellectual disabilities the chance to take classes and make friends in a safe residential setting, and then transition to work and an independent life.
Para Educator (PA) will assist a specific assigned student in the areas classroom academics and of independent living skills both on the campus and residential setting. The PA will be based out of student dorms, The College of Saint Rose campus, and various community locations. The PA will provide small group instruction on all domestic components of independent living, including, but not limited to, how to prepare a balanced meal, proper execution of household chores, and self-advocacy. The PA assist assigned student with participation in Saint Rose clubs and organizations, and explore campus and community opportunities that will promote social interaction and integration.
Conditions of Employment:
The PA must continue to meet the minimum requirements of annual training as determined by Living Resources.
Hours will vary by day and are subject to change as the need of the program change. Every 16 weeks, the length of a college semester, students schedules change.
Provide direct assessment, instruction, assistance, and guidance in all areas of domestic, academic, and social development, which will prepare students for independent living.
Assist with teaching small group cooking classes, focused on assisting specifically assigned student. Cooking classes focus on the process of preparing a meal, which will include information about nutrition, instruction on food preparation, following recipe directions, timing, kitchen safety and clean-up.
Teach how to properly complete all household chores, providing visual aids, one-on-one instruction, and assessments.
Facilitate participation in College Experience clubs and activities, as well as, Saint Rose clubs and organizations.
Follow the weekly schedule and participate in all instruction and support during clubs and activities.
Maintain regular communication with the supervisor, keeping them apprised of any issues or concerns that may arise.
Report all accidents, illnesses, or incidents involving students to the appropriate person(s) and complete all written documentation, following Living Resources' emergency and safety procedures and regulations.
Participate in all agency and departmental trainings and meetings.
Ensure that students are safe and individual rights are being met.
