Job Summary

The primary purpose of the position of the College and Career Counselor is to provide college and career readiness support to students and families. The College Counselor serves as the main source of information and counseling for students and their families in the college application and financial aid processes, as well as vocational training and career preparation.

The Counselor exercises responsible judgment and discretion in performing duties according to established school and state procedures and codes. The College and Career Counselor holds a key role in creating and maintaining a college-going and career ready school culture that extends to the feeder middle school and elementary schools. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The primary responsibility of the College and Career Counselor is to assist students and their families in identifying colleges, universities, majors, mentorships, internships, scholarships, financial aid, and career opportunities that meet the particular needs and goals of each student.

The College and Career Counselor works with the Guidance Counselors to support all students. By implementing a College and Career Service Plan, the College and Career Counselor will provide direct services to students; organize, maintain, and operate a high school College & Career Center; provide comprehensive college and career information and materials; and communicate with students, staff, families and community representatives concerning career planning and college preparation. Exemplary written and verbal communication skills and customer service skills are required. The Director of Curriculum and Instruction provides administrative direction and supervision, under the general supervision of the Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of training and experience, which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities, listed herein. Education: Possession of a Master of Arts/Science or higher degree in educational administration, instructional supervision, curriculum, or closely related field.

A degree in business administration is preferred but not required. EXPERIENCE Five plus years of experience or equivalent as a school level (9-12) college counselor including demonstrated leadership in providing student support services, youth work, community activities, student information system support, complaint procedures, school safety/climate leadership; and managing large scale projects in a school. REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES Valid Pupil Personnel Services Credential PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

A. Commits to honoring Bishop Garcia Diego Mission, Vision, Core Values, Commitments, and Indicators of Student Success. B. Collaborates with academic counselor to meet with each 9th-12th grade student at the school site to discuss academic goals and post-secondary plans, select courses to meet A-G requirements, and identify extracurricular activities to align with interests and talents. C. Collaborate with high school counselor on secondary planning for incoming students D.

Collaborate with high school counselor to develop and implement a College and Career Service Plan which includes Academic Enrichment, Test Preparation, Academic Advising, College Financing, College Awareness activities, and Career Exploration activities for students and families. E. Collaborate with high school counselor to plan and coordinate college representative meetings, Career Days, Career Month, Job Fairs, College Fairs, and field trips; arrange guest speakers from the local business community, college and university representatives, and military service recruiters. F. Coordinate with school site administrators and school counselors to maintain and update the University of California A-G course list.

G. Collaborate with high school academic counselor to assist students and families, individually and in small groups, in the college admission process, including college selection and application, major selection, financial aid and scholarship application, and transitioning to colleges and universities. H. Sign and issue standard work permits for students as appropriate in support of work readiness and creating job experiences. I. Collaborate with high school academic counselor to provide specialized assistance and information concerning career exploration and planning to students, parents/guardians, and school staff.

J. Assist students and families with assignments and record keeping, College Board website research and test registration, and ACT website research and test registration. K. Assist K-12 counselors and teachers with records to use for advisory with students L. Provide professional development to school staff using best practices to create a college going and career-ready culture and to prepare students for college access and persistence and prepare students to enter the workforce at a high level.

M. Organize, maintain and operate a high school College and Career Center. N. Develop and provide information and materials to students, families, and counselors related to career and college opportunities for high school students. O. Use Aeries to produce, evaluate and audit student transcripts, including verification and calculation of various GPAs (UC, CSU, graduation, weighted, etc). P.

Prepare career education and instructional materials and college materials and resources for use by teachers, counselors, families, and students; assist students in locating and using college/career information as needed for research, assignments and post-high school planning Q. Collaborate with the Career Technical Education (CTE) department on providing information and guidance to students and families regarding career pathways and readiness. R. Collaborate with high school academic counselor to plan, organize, develop and implement career events and publications; prepare letters, flyers, mailers, and other materials to publicize College and Career Center services, resources and speaker programs.

S. Collaborate with high school academic counselor to provide information about admission tests, such as SAT, ACT, and PSAT; assist students with applications and scheduling; distribute test results and counsel students and families about interpreting results. Inform students and parents/guardians about the importance of taking Advanced Placement classes and understanding test results. T. Attend meetings, conferences, professional development, and seminars regarding career trends, college admission, and financial aid.

U. Utilize, monitor, and analyze data from district data systems to perform the crucial functions of this position. Those systems would be inclusive of, but not limited to, National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), SchoolZilla, Aeries, CALPADS, Naviance, etc. Prepare and present reports to inform faculty, parents and guardians on progress and trends in college and career readiness.

V. Advocate for student educational rights and resources and provide personalized support to at promise student populations, including foster youth, English learners, students from low income families, students experiencing homelessness, and students with special needs. Include post-secondary training, college opportunities, scholarship opportunities, transitional programs, and independent living programs and resources. W. Perform other duties as assigned that are appropriate within the professional capacity of the College and Career Counselor.
