JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: COLLEGE & CAREER NAVIGATOR

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

This individual is employed by school districts to provide career services and shall work to ensure the coordination, accountability, and delivery of career awareness, development, and exploration to students. Reports to the Director of Adult Education.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Coordinates Student Community Referral System.

Utilizes a case management approach to link local services and resources to adult education students in conjunction with other local community agencies, (educational, social, and/or labor) for the purpose of establishing a comprehensive referral system.

Coordinates with local agencies intensive services and employment opportunities for the purpose of matching students with full time or part-time employment.

Conducts information sessions utilizing SCOIS to generate interest inventory

Develops individual career plans both short term and long term

Collaborates with local counselors to meet with potential students to explore employment or offer intensive services for those students who meet eligibility guidelines.

Offers skill training in job application completion (paper and computer-based) interview skills, resume preparation to prepare students for the world of work.

Contacts recruiters (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard) to establish informational sessions for potential adult education students.

Regularly schedule recruiters to meet with individual or small groups to provide opportunities for students to explore military options.

Coordinates student records with recruiters to ensure transition into the military.

Presents information about local postsecondary/other training opportunities to students and their availability.

Coordinates on-site visits with the technical college admissions counselors to include TRIO and traditional technical college admissions program for the purpose of sharing program information with adult education students highlighting certificate, diploma and degree programs.

Provides student assistance with financial aid information and forms to be completed.

Assists adult education students through the application process.

Maintains a student database to include contact/attendance and student placement through LACES management system.

Works in tandem with the adult education teachers and staff to promote students achieving their goals.

Maintains complete and accurate records/reports of the program and prepares such reports as may be required by the SC Department of Education, Office of Adult Education. These reports and documents include Transition Specialist Quarterly Report, Student Academic Check Forms, and any important student-related documents and reports.

Participates in meetings and workshops sponsored by the Office of Adult Education and other professional development activities.

Attends and successfully complete the National Career Development Facilitators certification training.

Prepares and disseminates promotional and program materials.

Communicates to local community resources on a regular basis progress or challenges that impact the transition initiative.

Coordinates and presents professional development workshops in career development and guidance for work-based constituents.

Assists Adult Education in promoting the goals of quality career development of students.

Assists students in identifying and accessing career information and resource material.

Supports students in the exploration of career clusters and the selection of an area of academic focus within a cluster of study.

Learns and become familiar with ways to improve and promote career development opportunities within the district.

Assists with the selection, administration, and evaluation of career interest inventories.

Assists with the implementation of the district's student career plan or individual graduation plan.

Assists Adult Education in planning and developing information on career development.

Coordinates with school counselors and administration career events, career classes, and career programming.

Coordinates community resources and citizens representing diverse occupations in career development activities for parents and students.

Assists with the usage of computer assisted career guidance systems.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university, prefered. At least one year of successful experience in career counseling, employment placement, college placement or student services.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable. Computer Literacy required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Requires light work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office machines within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor and coordinating work assignments of others.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of administrative and technical documents and reports.

Requires the ability to enter computer data / word process and prepare various types of reports and documents with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Has the ability to speak before audience with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form.

Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to teach co-workers. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages including computer / network technology, information management systems, network administration, etc.

Numeric Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to use mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office equipment; to operate a motor vehicle.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. The worker may be subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the District as they pertain to the performance of the Career and College Navigator.

Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.

Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical and interpersonal skills.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.
