With an overarching mission to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of approximately 1.775 million older New Yorkers, the New York City Department for the Aging (NYC Aging) is deeply committed to helping older adults age in their homes and creating a community-care approach that reflects a model age-inclusive city.

The Press and Public Information Unit (PPI) promotes the agency's services and resources in the community through media and public outreach. The unit oversees internal and external communications. This includes managing press inquiries, NYC Aging's public-facing website, social media channels, the creation and distribution of marketing materials, and media campaigns. Each month, PPI also issues a Commissioner Column and an electronic newsletter to help share news, updates, and key issues to external stakeholders. In addition, the Unit organizes the agency's press events and helps prepare senior leadership and NYC Aging staff for public speaking and events.

NYC Aging seeks a creative, dynamic, and motivated college student or graduate student to serve as the Communications and Public Information College Aide, reporting to the Director of Press and Public Information. The Press and Public Information unit promotes the agency's services and priorities in the community through media relations and public-facing platforms such as the agency website, social media platforms, and marketing materials.

This unit oversees:

  • The agency's public communications, press outreach, digital platforms, and media campaigns.

  • The preparation of agency officials for interviews and speeches, and drafting press releases, op-eds, talking points, and briefing documents.

  • The agency's press conferences and events.

The ideal person for the Communications and Public information College Aide position will help create and design marketing collaterals that promote NYC Aging's services and programs through communications and marketing needs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Create agency marketing materials and collaterals (brochures, social media graphics, website graphics, etc.).

  • Create and posting videos, photos and posts to social media and analyze the performance of content.

  • Assist in the development of media campaigns and Public Service Announcements (PSAs).

  • Write content for agency website and intranet.

  • Perform research.

  • Track relevant press coverage, devise response as appropriate, and determine whether a larger public response/strategy is warranted.

  • Promote agency accomplishments through targeted media pitching, events and other creative strategies.

  • Help prepare agency officials for media interviews and round tables.

  • Organize press events and press conferences.

  • Assist to create fact sheets, briefings, and talking points as needed for Commissioner and executive staff.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficient in MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Graphic design skills.

  • Proficient in Excel to manage media projects.

  • Ability to adapt video and photo content for various social media (YouTube, FB, Twitter, and IG) platforms according to best practices.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to keep projects on track creatively and in accordance with deadlines.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
